My daughter, Anna….

I’ve had a few friends tell me that they love this blog, but that they don’t have any older pieces in their home with meaning.

It made me realize that I find the word “old” to be synonymous with something that has a story. Sometimes those things are decades old passed down heirlooms, sometimes they’re thrift or yard sale finds, and sometimes they’re pieces that you purchased new but your kids colored on or your husband spilled coffee on or you got nail polish on.

New pieces become “old” to me once they have a story. And it doesn’t take long to get one. It may just be how long you waited for it to go on sale before you bought it, how quickly it got knicked or stained, or that funny or kind thing someone said while you were standing next to it.

It’s these stories that defy trends. They’re the reason we hold on to these pieces a little longer, getting creative how to make them work and then one day sending them off with a heart filled with gratitude when it’s time to pass them on.

That’s what this space is about. The stories you make with your life as these pieces of furniture set the back drop. And sometimes how the back drop changes, but the stories keep getting told.

If you want a storied home like the ones I share on here, don’t look to the age of your pieces. Look to the stories that you and your people create around them. Chances are, you already have a home full of stories.

You may have noticed a few changes around here. Home176 started as a blog for me to post the stories behind the second-home pieces in my home and others’ homes. It will still be that. I have a few stories already lined up that I’ll be sharing this month. I also had an Instagram account for my book, “Letters to My Friends.” In addition to that, I had stories and poems and essays on my laptop that weren’t seeing the light of day because they didn’t fit into either of my writing accounts. So, Home176 has now become the place that encompasses all of my writing. It will still tell stories of home and the pieces in it. It will talk about my book and share any updates on it. And it will be, as you’ve seen, a space where I share my short form writings, long form writings, and any updates of writings shared in different places.

I’ve written more about this on my Substack if you’d like to read a longer version there. But in short, I have a collection of stones, and it’s time to put them all in one pot 🪴
