So one of the first things I do is replace the 40 pin interconnect connectors...next is a safety issue with the Solenoid and lighting bridges if one of these shorts to ground the only fuse in the circuit is the main 120VAC .... the solution is to add a 8 amp fuse on the A/C leg of the bridge Williams actually added these 2 fuses in later games. A couple of things to note...if you look closely at the bridges you will notice that one leg has a different orientation than the other 3 that designates the positive DC terminal directly diagonal is the DC ground/Negative "Black wire" the other 2 are A/c and have the same wire color in this case blue.
After the fuses are added you need to label them.... go to Incognito or via Pinball Rebal and get some labels... they have pretty much anything you will ever need with respect to paper products/label and all manufactures are represented best of all it is free.

One of the mods I do for the power supply is to replace the existing 100v Zener diodes and replace them with a 91v versions...the lower voltage will help increase display life with a slight reduction if any of brightness. I also replace all of the 40 year old electrolytic capacitors... especially important for the 5v filter cap. Client had supplied a lithium battery board that actually pretty interesting .... one nice feature is a test led to check the battery.
The blocking diode on the board is redundant to D17 already on the MPU if you follow the + trace you will see it mounted horizonal right above the new memory saver board. I tested D17 and it checked out good, so I added a jumper around the diode as seen on the pic. this will increase the 2032 battery voltage ... it only around 3.60vdc to start with and the forward voltage drop of a diode is typically .4 to .6 so you essentially would lose another half a volt to the 5101 RAM.

Tomorrow, we replace the dreaded 40 pin interconnector...stay tuned

OK FIRST THINGS FIRST***IT IS NOT FOR SALE*** REPEAT NOT FOR SALE***** The owner waited a very long time to get this game and has no intention of flipping it!!

Working on a super rare VARKON by Williams...1982 for a client only 90 games were every made!! It uses a system 7 board set and displays. I feel somewhat honored to be able to even work on this game. more pics and repair/upgrades coming every couple of days.

text from IPD.... below

This is a pinball machine disguised as a video game. Flippers are operated by joysticks on control panel. Has two playfields. Main playfield has two 3-inch flippers, one pop bumper, and a kick-back lane. Ball is launched into play from between flippers. Completing target sequence on main playfield activates lower playfield which has two 2-inch flippers and its own ball. 3 or 5 ball play.

To quote "Uncle W***y":

"Varkon is a two-level game, although each playfield has its own ball. (The ball does not pass between the two playfields.) The lower playfield is visible through a window in the upper playfield.

Both playfields are tilted away from the player and viewed through a mirror. The mirror is mounted at eye-level, so the illusion is presented that the ball is moving about on a vertical playfield. The mirror is only partially silvered and the score displays are mounted behind it. Also mounted behind the mirror are some flash lamps behind a screened plastic. The effect of the flash lamps when they fire is to overlay lightning bolts over the reflected image of the playfield.

The is 100% working but the owner wants me to go through all the boards and bulletproof them.
I will be starting on the power supply
