As a yoga teacher, I’m constantly learning how to walk a fine line between holding space and getting out of the way.
To be honest, it’s hard to know who wants what! We are all completely different, and we all come to the mat looking for different things in our practice.
I realized I was holding back in my classes out of a fear of being "too difficult." So, I decided to offer more challenging options. Shortly after, I received feedback that the class had felt too hard and left some feeling off.
Immediately, my old patterns kicked in. I felt that heavy weight of responsibility for someone else's experience. Logically I know that I am not responsible for how others feel. But as a yoga teacher my goal is to help people feel better, lighter, than when they walked in.
It was a powerful reminder for me! The options offered in class are just that—OPTIONS. You don't have to do everything your yoga teacher says! You are always in full control of your practice, taking what serves your body and leaving the rest behind.
Moving forward, we’re stepping into sequences bringing in real opportunities to challenge the physical body not to punish ourselves or achieve "perfection," but to EXPLORE our edges.
Remember that falling out of a pose, choosing child’s pose, or modifying isn't doing it wrong. That is the yoga.
Come as you are, listen to your own body, and take what you need. See you on the mat! 🤍
