Ballet Term of the Week 🩰
Pas de Cheval - from French, meaning “step of the horse.”

In ballet, pas de cheval is a small, quick movement in which the working foot draws up toward the supporting leg before extending outward… traditionally said to resemble the action of a horse pawing the ground. 🐴

Although the movement is small, it requires plenty of coordination. From a biomechanics perspective, pas de cheval challenges the dancer to coordinate the hip and ankle while controlling the working foot and transferring weight efficiently.

It’s a great reminder that small steps can require big amounts of precision!
