Bear Steps In as Unlikely Crossing Guard, Stuns Drivers With Heartwarming Act
GATLINBURG, Tenn. December 9, 2025. Drivers on a quiet mountain road near the Great Smoky Mountains were left stunned when a large black bear unexpectedly acted as a crossing guard, helping a family of ducks make it safely across the pavement.
Witnesses said traffic in both directions had come to a stop after ducks wandered onto the roadway. Before anyone could intervene, the bear emerged from the tree line and positioned itself between the ducks and the waiting cars.
The bear held its ground as the mother duck and her ducklings waddled across, calmly watching until the entire family reached the other side. Once the ducks were safe, the bear turned and walked back toward the woods, allowing drivers to continue on their way.
Photos and videos from the scene quickly spread online, with many calling the bear’s behavior surprising and heartwarming. Wildlife officials say encounters like this are uncommon but highlight the remarkable instincts animals can display.
One driver said they will never forget the moment a bear took charge and ensured a safe crossing for some very small travelers.
