It is with a heavy heart that we announce we are closing the Majestic Theatre after 15 years as its operators. Our last day open was March 12th as the pandemic ripped through our community, and we would have never guessed then that we were closing its doors for good. Mark and I could not overcome the challenges of months of back rent, future months of limited seating capacity, and the very real supply chain issues in Hollywood.
For those unaware, only a handful of new films will come to movie theaters this year. Movie companies have seen how lucrative it is to bring a title straight to streaming, and it is uncertain how theaters will lure Hollywood back.
This reality breaks our hearts. Outside of a pandemic, we passionately value the shared experience of watching a film in a theater. I’ll never forget the true catharsis of crying with my community while watching United 93, or hearing children laugh together at every kids’ movie. I liked to watch faces light up with wonder and delight during Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse when the young hero stepped into his greatness and took his Leap of Faith. I hoped that young members of our LGBTQ community felt seen and supported when we showed Love, Simon, and Brokeback Mountain. We loved feeling connected to global film events like Star Wars and Harry Potter premieres.
Over 15 years, Mark and I had the best seat in the house to watch our special community thrive. We saw children grow up, parents with newly empty nests look bewildered at their newfound freedom, couples divorce, new couples emerge on a first public date, beloved regulars die, the newly bereaved take a tentative step forward with their support systems. We watched young, boisterous employees craft and step into beautiful futures. It was truly a privilege.
I ask that you feed yourself beautiful movies, not just what your streaming service’s algorithm serves you. Support the Crested Butte Film Festival and the Center for the Arts. And support local business. It’s worth a few extra bucks to support a local’s dreams. Also, in the spirit of the Majestic staff, please stay a little bit wild and silly.
We thank you for supporting us for 15 years,
Ali and Mark Drucker
