Today is MLK Day, or Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and it marks the date of his birth in 1929. Martin Luther King played a very important role in the Civil Rights Movement, demonstrating nonviolent activism and protesting racial discrimination in federal and state law.

Martin Luther King's famous "I Have A Dream" speech was given at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., in front of more than 250,000 people in 1963, only 61 years ago. He was only 34 years of age and rallied for "jobs and freedom," one hundred years after Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

So while so many of us get the day off today, including I hope everyone takes a moment to reflect and remember the powerful things Martin Luther King Jr. and other Civil Rights activists did to bring our country to where it is today.
