The Crawfordsville High School Band is THREE TIME All-Music Award recipients from the Indiana State School Music Association.

What does this mean?

This is the highest award for programs that get GOLD ratings in Marching Band, Jazz Band, Concert Band, small Ensembles, and individual soloists!

We believe that the most important thing is that band programs are well-rounded and we can confidently say that for three years straight the Marching Athenians, Gold'n Blues Jazz, Wind Ensemble, Group One Soloists, and Group One Ensembles have all received top honors!

Students at CHS have the opportunity to work hard in all aspects of the band program setting them up for any opportunities they may be presented after High School!

Based on our success in the last two seasons the Athenian Color Guard has been promoted to from Regional A class to AA Class in the Indiana High School Color Guard Association.

Classes are based not on school size or color guard size but competitive success! We are super proud of everything we have done in the last few years to achieve this honor!

Today we kick off our series , highlighting and celebrating everything the CVille Band Program is and who we represent!

Today we celebrate History! Crawfordsville schools date back almost 150 years. In that time, music has been a staple of education at CCSC. Not much has changed, as the commitment to the performing arts stays strong.

The Indiana State School Music Association website states, "Music festivals for students in Indiana secondary and elementary schools began in the mid-1920s, when a small number of bands and orchestras participated in national playing events. Under the sponsorship of band instrument manufacturers, these events provided an opportunity for a number of Indiana groups to gain national recognition. During the 1930s, the Hobart High School Band, directed by William Revelli, the Hammond High School Band, directed by Adam Lezinsky, and the Crawfordsville High School Band, directed by Joseph Gremelspacher, were among the top-ranking concert bands in the nation."

Joseph Gremelspacher would go on to lead the bands at Indiana State University through the 1960s. He was replaced by Vernon E. Spaulding, who was one of the founding members of Northern Indiana School Band, Orchestra, and Vocal Association (NISBOVA), which later combined with ISMA-South to create what we now know as ISSMA.

Other notable names include Wilbur and Sidney De Paris, who were born in Crawfordsville in the early 1900s. They grew up learning music from their parents and playing/touring locally. Wilbur and Sidney grew up to be incredible jazz musicians, playing with the likes of Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald.

While a lot has changed since those times, one thing remains! We are Athenians, and we are proud to stand on the shoulders of giants! Our history inspires us to be better each day, and we do not take that lightly!
