HONORABLE MENTION! What?!!! 🎉🥕🌽🥦🌶️

I’m still a little stunned.

This week, Cultivating Kindness Crew received an Honorable Mention at the 61st Annual Exhibition & Conference of the Association of Nebraska Arts Clubs.

Out of 293 submissions from artists across Nebraska, these four cheerful produce pals, Dilly, Pepper, Broccolette, and Cobb, were recognized among so many incredible works of art.

The funny thing is… I very nearly didn’t submit my art.

Somewhere along the way, I had convinced myself that my work just wasn’t “that kind of art.”

You know the kind. The serious kind. The gallery kind. The award-show kind.

But from the very first sketch through the final doodles, my purpose for Cultivating Kindness Crew was never to create something worthy of a ribbon. It was simply to be a cheerful messenger and connector of people.

A reminder to encourage someone.
A reason to celebrate someone.
A way to tell another human being, “I see you, and you’re doing better than you think.”

As much joy as this recognition brings me, the greater joy comes from knowing these little cheerleaders are already out in the world helping people congratulate, encourage, thank, and support the important people in their lives.

Thank you to everyone who has welcomed them into your homes, classrooms, businesses, and mailboxes. You’ve helped prove something I needed to learn myself:

Kindness belongs in art.

And apparently, art about kindness belongs in art shows, too. 💚

P.S. Dilly, Pepper, Broccolette, and Cobb are available as notecards, stickers, notepads, and Color Me Happy coloring cards. I’ll drop a link in the comments for anyone who would like to bring a little extra encouragement into the world.

Decades ago, it was shiny red and black, built to be sturdy and last a lifetime...generations of lifetimes.

It's hauled kids, kittens and puppies, backyard picnic fare, stick and rock collections, and countless toys.

The kids have grown and moved into their their next season, while the season at home has shifted once again. It's quieter, fewer squeals of laughter and sticky fingers.

While the body isn't quite as bright and shiny as it once was - dents appeared along with a bit of rust and one of the wheels wobbles and squeaks a bit, there's still a lot of life in this old thing. It's usefulness never diminished.

It's a quieter season in life, sometimes lonelier, yet full of possibilities - opportunities for usefulness and growth where there didn't seem time for in the past.

New seasons don't arrive with instructions. They're shaped by what we choose to plant, nurture, and carry with us.

Who is someone who is entering or in a “New Season of Life”? These cards or sticker, along with a heartfelt message from you, could be the encouragement they need to embrace the possibilities. ✍️💌📬

Have you ever heard that FEAR can be an acronym for “False Expectations Appearing Real”?

Once again, this has proved to be true in my life.

I put off finishing this original watercolor until the morning of the Cattlemen's Ball of Nebraska, Inc. Art Show because I was *fearful* I’d ruin the painting while adding the white barbed wire lines.

Thankfully, it turned out fabulously, then the hand-drawn, barbed wire doodles on the mat gave the perfect final flourish for “Red, White, & Boot”.

Perhaps next time I’ll remember that everything turns out exquisitely better than could ever be planned and won’t be quite as anxious. 😆

When I was a kid, my teacher, Mrs. Hahn rewarded good behavior with Happy Face Awards where she wrote a little something about why she was proud of her students. Each time I received one, it was like a hug to my heart.

That’s an example of the power of heartfelt written words. This video shares another.

Have you ever experienced someone’s heart written on paper to you? I’d love to hear your story. ❤️

One of the challenges of preparing for an event you’re not sure what to expect from is how much of which items to take.

Of course, the originals from several of these will be framed and available to light up someone’s decor each day…that’s the easy part.

Deciding how many cards, stickers, drink coasters, and note pads to package is another animal in itself

Take these adorable coasters, for example.
How many of singles, 4 packs and 10 packs do we prep and have on the ready for folks to take home to wick away their beverage sweat, gift, and brighten someone’s day?

Sure, they *could* order from our website, if we run out, BUT the idea is to make adding joy to their life SIMPLE, and buying it right then requires no “remembering to do it” later.

If you were me, what quantities would you think would be enough?
