Concerts in the Woods

Concerts in the Woods Weekend music: folk, Americana, singer/songwriter, Appalachian, bluegrass, Celtic, blues, country and more. Admission by donation. Managed by Norm Johnson.

14 miles out on the end of the beautiful Toandos Peninsula sits the Laurel B. Johnson Community Center operated by the Jefferson County Parks & Recreation District and the citizens of the Toandos Peninsula. This facility offers a lovely community room with seating for 50+, a fireplace, and a full-service kitchen. The Toandos Peninsula is frequently called the "Coyle Peninsula" because the communit

y of Coyle is located at the tip and occasionally it is called the "Dabob Peninsula" because it separates Dabob Bay from the rest of the Hood Canal. And it is also affectionately called "the end of the earth" by some of the residents who live way out here. There are no services here in the woods like a gas station, restaurant or market, so come prepared. Whichever name you want to use, it's the perfect place to hear an intimate concert in a beautiful room "at the end of the earth." Concerts are for all ages. Admission is by donation (suggested $10). Please join us. Hosted by Norm Johnson

Jesse Terry, www.jesseterrymusic.com

With no pretense, Terry’s well-crafted folk/pop songs tell the story of what it means to be human in the 21st century. His gorgeous singing voice is the perfect complement to lyrics confronting the duality of life: love and its inevitable challenges, grief and the integration of loss into a person’s life, the joys of fatherhood and the nagging doubts accompanying that come with it.

Music that breaks hearts and uplifts an audience at the same time.

Connecticut-based Jesse Terry’s seventh album, When We Wander, is the first he wrote since becoming a parent. So it’s no surprise the family theme courses through many of its 12 songs. His music career has been a family project ever since he became a full-time touring artist a decade ago.

That was right around the time when Jesse met his wife Jess working on a cruise ship in the South Pacific. “As soon as we got back to the states, I proposed to her at Nashville’s Bluebird Cafe in July 2010 and we packed up the car for the first tour right after that. We’ve been touring together full-time ever since.” Now with three-year-old Lily added to the clan, family is more important than ever to him, including the parental urge to love and protect. “If I were the moon, I’d light all of your back roads,” he sings in “If I Were The Moon”: “You wouldn’t need no headlights / I’d always be full.”

The life of a touring family inspired the album’s title track. “When we wander, when we wander / Don’t it feel like we’re finally found.” But in the face of the pandemic, he has found that “wandering is not just a literal thing. We’ve followed our hearts with so many decisions in 2020-2021, and have found that there are many ways to wander and be free and brave.”

The stage has been Jesse’s home for a decade. He plays around 150 shows a year, from Bonnaroo to the Philadelphia Folk Festival, the 30A Songwriters Festival to AmericanaFest. When the pandemic canceled concerts and delayed the album’s release, he pivoted to performing online and found a strong new connection to his fans, who had helped fund his albums all along. “My musical tribe has always been there for me,” he says with gratitude.

Me and the Boys
Outdoor Concert on the Grass!

Q: What do you get when you take three of the top bluegrass guitar pickers in the entire region – add four singers, a five-string upright bass, two mandolins, a fiddle, a dobro, and a five-string banjo?
A: The acoustic quartet called Me & the Boys!
“Me & the Boys” featuring Roger Ferguson, Terry Enyeart, Rick Meade, and Mick Nicholson is a group from the Pacific Northwest rocking the acoustic stages around Puget Sound. An amazing group that, both instrumentally and vocally, fall in the category of over-kill! This little four-piece can deliver the bluegrass goods from trad-grass to assorted genres e.g. classic rock and jazz – all with total ease – and on traditional acoustic instruments! Each member, with more than 30 yrs professional experience, is deserving of the “Me” status… Yet, as the name implies, nobody needs top billing. They just want to continue to make great music.

Great American Trainwreck - https://gatrainwreck.com
*Outdoor Concert on the Grass! (* Please bring your lawn chairs or picnic blankets, but note that if it is raining at showtime, we will move the concert inside.)

Full of outlaw country, bluegrass, and northwest music you oughta know, Great American Trainwreck combines melodic riffs, thoughtful lyrics and heavenly harmonies to define their approach to traditional genres. Hailing from Seattle, the band formed in 2016 when Chuck Dunklin (guitar & mandolin) and Stephanie Ward (vocals & acoustic guitar) met in Chuck’s basement apartment to play cover songs by Alison Krauss and Emmylou Harris. The songwriting began and they were soon joined by the talents of Dave Bush (drums), Dan Rogers (bass), Andy Basinger (keys), and Judd Wasserman (guitar & vocals). No longer confined to the basement, they are currently working on their 3rd studio album while touring extensively through the Pacific Northwest.

Brittany Jean - https://bjeanmusic.com
Originally from West Chicago, IL, Brittany Jean is a folk singer/songwriter based in the Pacific Northwest, currently living in a little, apple town in Washington. Brittany’s style is rooted in the folk and Americana music she has loved all her life, and in one way or another, every song she sings is a love song.
During the past few years, Brittany’s performances have ventured farther and farther from home — opening for Three Dog Night’s sold-out show at the City Winery in New York City, playing the legendary Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, performing at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas, taking on her first international tour on Vancouver Island, British Columbia… to name a few adventures!
Brittany has released five, full-length albums — all recorded in Nashville: Whispered Stories, Leavin’ Home, Wander With Me, All The Love, and Wintertide…

The Black Feathers https://theblackfeathers.com
The ability to write songs that are both modern and ancient is a rare thing. The product of an arcane art of weaving in traditional influences so thoroughly that they become the warp and weft of fresh creations.

The Black Feathers, made up of Ray Hughes and Sian Chandler, are two such talents. They first became aware of the magic between them while collaborating on several musical projects, becoming The Black Feathers and life partners in 2012.

Americana, Folk, and Acoustic Indie Rock sensibilities coexist comfortably in their musical world, with Hughes’ guitar work buoying the kind of harmonies often only heard in family bands.

Ranger and the “Re-Arrangers” evoke the spirit of a Paris cafe and the raucous energy of a Romani campsite with their version of Hot Club Swing. “At the heart of their sound is Ranger’s sweet violin playing… his sense of melody and daring improvisations” (World Rhythm).
