What a crazy night!
In this photo you can see Jupiter and Mars in the lower right corner, the red in the upper corner is the Aurora, and there is a shooting star from the Perseid Meteor Shower in the upper left section.

This is as shot, completely unedited.

I'm heading out to shoot some more, but I couldn't resist coming in and looking through what I had shot so far.

Going to be light in a few hours, time to make hay!

Well, not bad for a first attempt.
I am a touch out of focus, but the first thing I've learned is it is a slow process to focus the camera through the scope.

The focal length is slightly different from using the eye piece on the scope. I can't see the stars on the "live view" screen of my camera, so I have to take a photo, then adjust the focus a bit, then shoot again.
Keep repeating this process until it is sharp.
I thought I was close, but clearly not quite there.

Lesson learned.

I am happy to actually see the cloud of the galaxy in the shot though, and if you look close, you can kind of see the spiral arms of it stretching out into space.

Needs a lot of work, clearly, but a decent first attempt in my book!

This spider was very patient for me. I showed my appreciation by being brief and leaving it be.

This little jumping spider looks to be contemplating the mysteries of the universe.Kind of a dreamy look to this one.

Well, this was interesting...
Found some black ants foraging on the sunflower stalk that is growing in front of my house.
Sat down to get some photos of the ants and a few flies, and I managed to catch this moment.
When I took this photo, I had NO idea that the orange and white thing was a critter as well. I thought the ant was sniffing around a piece of dead leaf or something.
At one point, three ants had surrounded it, and it jumped away and that was the first moment I realized it wasn't just some piece of organic material, but another bug!

I'm working on identifying it, as I have absolutely no clue what it is.

Managed to catch this one tonight.
Playing around with a borrowed 85mm f/1.4 lens, and boy does this thing let in a LOT of light.

There were so many stars in this, I had to reduce the star light in the image to make it look less "noisy".

This is the less noisy version of this stack...

There is a balance in here somewhere that I am still working to find, but it is just wild how many stars are out there that we can't really see. Not to mention that the portion that are even visible from earth is just a tiny drop in the tremendous bucket that is the entire Milky Way galaxy.

It is absolutely wild man....

I was out chasing butterflies with my camera and macro setup and I stopped to catch a few photos of this lovely little flower.

Unfortunately I didn't get any butterflies, but at least I didn't come in empty handed!

Noticeable lack of stars in the sky over the past week, which is making me impatient. I have two different shots planned for the next couple of clear nights...
I did manage to get a decent enough shot of the moon last night though.
One of the most surprising things about photography is just how difficult it is to get a nice shot of the moon...
I'll be damned if I can't get a nice sharp image when it is the focus of the photo, and it tends to be a problem if it isn't the focus of the photo.

It is bright, and surprisingly fast! Realistically, I need a bit longer lens for this kind of shot. There is a lot of dark sky that got cropped out just to make the moon a viewable size in the photo.

I'll get there, but for today, this one isn't so terrible.

I couldn't be more pleased with this photo. When I grabbed my camera and tripod to take this one, this is exactly what I pictured in my head.
This is as shot, with no editing after the fact. This was my first "real" attempt at a final shot, and it took two test photos to nail down the shutter speed.
I used my phone to "light paint" the barrel and smoke trail.
This is a fire barrel that is still smouldering hours after the fire has gone out.
I took this at around 3:00am with a two minute exposure time.

I can definitely tell I'm progressing.
