I haven’t been able to be in studio or create much lately. Life has just been doing life things and priorities have pulled me away. While most is not anything I can really control (life events, house events, sprinkler repair)… I have the wonderful knowledge that I really miss creating and can’t wait to get back at it!

Let’s try something new. Decided to start helping myself with being uncomfortable… by putting myself in the most awkward position I could. Thank you .connect for letting me show and tell.

I’ve been trying to muster up all the right words for what I’m feeling after the open studios last weekend. I usually wander through the days and pretend to be a loner. The fact is, I’ve received an incredible amount of support. My family, my co-workers, fellow artists, wonderful long time friends, and hundreds of new friends all came to support me and the other artists at Poor Yorick Studios. All I can say is Thank you to all, the only way this happens is with your support.

PARTY PEOPLE…. There it is! Tomorrow 4:00-10:00. Open Studios at Poor Yorick Studios (126 W Crystal Ave, Salt Lake City, UT 84115). Come see me in studio C2 and stay for all the other amazing artists I get to share space with. This isn’t just a gallery hang out. This is an invite into the creative spaces of working artists, where we talk shop, share stories, and build community.

One of the newest off the easel. This is a 20x20 mixed media. It uses collage sheets and wax medium to create texture, with a shellac burn to create even more depth. All very cool, but it’s what lies beneath that is the real star of the show… a base layer that helps it really glow.

Taking a page out of the grunge era of design that I absolutely admire. It wasn’t until I got some wonderful advice from my friends that I was able to kind of figure how to put my own spin using that grunge design influence. The best way I could figure was to snap a grid and get to work. The whole can vas is covered in poetry pages. There is also a ton of collage, encaustic work, and coffee as the main stain. The idea was to capture the order vs chaos of both grunge design and human nature. This piece is called Nature vs Nurture. 24x24 - mixed media - frame to be built soon.

There is more to this one than meets the eye. The piece is called Coffee Mountains and, except for the gold and black ink stain, is colored strictly by coffee and coffee grounds. Coffee is mixed into paste compound to create the tans and browns. The studio has never smelled so good! And to be able to use natural materials as pigment was very grounding and serine. This piece was very much inspired by Asian art and ink drawings. It was a practice in restraint for me, but still couldn’t help creating in texture.

Instead of worrying about it, thanks to the few that talked me off the ledge, I’m deciding to just embrace it. From a mounting mistake, I decided to run with it and added graffiti. Then tossed some hardware on there to mount it and suddenly it started to really live like a rugged urban scene. The piece is called “whatchu lookin at?” It is partially a work that came about as shapes popping out of an abstract print. But… it’s also a pretty introspective look into my own fears of judgement and control. So, I’m glad you all talked me back into loving it. Thank You!

Gearing up for another show at the Urban Arts Gallery. This one I am super excited about and am making some new art for. One of these two pieces (“Playtime 1 & 2”) will be going into the show. They are 24x25 mixed media. Literally just had a blast trying some new stuff on them. Threw the whole tool box at them… collage, acrylic skins, encaustic with a shellac burn. Total blast and complete fire hazard. Loved it all!

Let’s normalize showing crappy art. This is my version. I actually really liked it. It started as a monoprint, then I ended up using the patterns in the print to create the represented figures. Added some ink, and decided it was an edgy urban piece. I found some scrap board and tissue and decided to collage black tissue over the board. Color right?! Then decided I wanted dimension to it and had the divine idea to mount the work to a cradle. What I completely forgot due to lack of focus was any sort of proper mounting technique. Crap… now I have a wonderful started piece with fricken rivers of wrinkles glued into it and a piece that is ready for the trash can. This is how we learn, people. They can’t all be winners, but they can still be inspiring.
