"A Portrait of Two People" – Topsail Island, NC – In June a year ago, we spent a wonderful week at Topsail Island. Most mornings Miss Jan slept in, but I was up before dawn with coffee in hand on the condo balcony. The kids kept inviting me to join their sunrise walks on the beach… and I kept politely declining.I had other plans. While they strolled, I was busy taking nearly a thousand photos from that balcony, chasing the perfect moment as the sky lit up. (I may have temporarily lost most of them — don’t ask.) After finally recovering the images and sorting through them for days, this one stood out. From there it became this piece — a mix of photography and creative editing that brought the scene to life. People often see the vastness of the ocean and how small the two figures look in comparison. Others are drawn to the dramatic colors, the rolling waves, or the way the early light reflects on the wet sand. But to me… this isn’t really a seascape or a landscape. It’s a portrait. A quiet portrait of two people sharing a beautiful morning together — tiny against the enormity of the ocean, yet completely wrapped up in their own little world.

A weathered barn with faded red peeling paint stands sentinel in the tall grass, its once-vibrant boards now worn soft by decades of wind and sun. Parked beside it, a rusting Studebaker pickup sits abandoned in the weeds—two relics of a bygone era quietly keeping each other company.
The barn’s great doors hang silent and warped, while the old truck’s paint cracks and flakes away, chrome dulled by time. Together they endure the loneliness of antiquity, side by side in the golden field. Once, this place breathed with life—the creak of the barn doors at harvest, the rumble of the Studebaker’s engine carrying tools and crops at dawn, the rhythm of hard work and simple living. Now only the wind moves through the swaying grass, carrying echoes of stories no one is left to tell. There’s a quiet dignity in their shared decay.
They’ve outlasted their purpose, yet they remain—faithful companions refusing to vanish completely. Two old souls bearing witness to the slow, gentle passage of time.Some things don’t need restoration to hold beauty. Sometimes the most moving stories are written in peeling paint, rust, and the steadfast companionship of what remains
