Yesterday our staff installed a segment about African-American contributions during the Civil War. While our collection is light in these particular artifacts, there are plentiful documents from both sides detailing the recruitment, combat experience, and camp life for these men. Everyone had a fantastic time at the Pearce Museum’s first Museum Tabletop Wargaming Day this past Saturday!

One of the great strengths of historical wargaming is the opportunity to explore the decisions, actions, and consequences that shaped, or might have even changed, history. What might Gettysburg have looked like if Colonel Joshua Chamberlain had been killed during the initial fighting on Little Round Top? How might the Battle of Cedar Creek have unfolded if Union forces had held against General Early’s initial morning assault?

These kinds of questions sparked fascinating historical discussions throughout the day, alongside plenty of great games, camaraderie, and fun.

A special thank-you to Heart of Texas Wargamers and to everyone who traveled from near and far to join us. Your enthusiasm helped make our first Museum Tabletop Wargaming Day a tremendous success, and we look forward to doing it again!

Roll the dice, learn some history, and have some fun! 🎲

Join us this Saturday, August 8 from 10 AM to 4 PM for our first Museum Tabletop Wargaming Day, hosted with Heart of Texas Wargamers Club at the Pearce Museum! Watch and participate in miniature recreations of the Battle of Cedar Creek and the Battle of Gettysburg, learn to play, and check out the hobby up close.

BONUS: everyone who participates in a game gets a free Participation Token...bring it to the front desk of the museum for 25% off adult admission or 33% off senior admission to the museum!

Two generous friends deserve recognition for their recent donations to our museum. The first to Don Smith for the Goodyear Patent hard rubber Navy buttons, worn by sailors during the Civil War. The second is to our docent, Wayne Rogers, for two gunboat models; the USS Cairo and the CSS Tennessee.

Thanks to these individuals and their donations, our curator has now created a remarkable display on the naval aspect of the Civil War. Included is a genuine piece of timber from the Confederate ironclad "Virginia." Come out and see what else it has!

On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger read General Order No. 3 to the citizens of Galveston. This order declared that his military district of Texas was enforcing Proclamation 95, otherwise known as the Emancipation Proclamation. It was on this day that all slaves in Texas were confirmed to be "then, thenceforth, and forever free." The reading of this order is where the holiday, Juneteenth, originated.

Tomorrow, Friday, June 19, the Pearce Museum will be closed in observance of the Federal holiday.
