A commission from the MiL of a friend who asked me to recreate the octopus image from an ancient plate accredited tothe Binningen Painter in Southern Italy in the third quarter of the 4th century. I’m a dotter and figures are outside my wheelhouse. This guy was cute though. I used chalk pencil to get the shape from a stencil I made. Even though I knew I’d paint over it I sorta wanted to draw in the details to get the feel of it. My paints weren’t a perfect match for the ancient colors. The more I worked on it the greater my appreciation for the way the original artist worked. I added a dotted border after attempting something similar to the original, which is deceptively simple in design but not creation. It works and I had a happy delivery. Yay for fun commissions.
