This month, we are hosting the “MASK” poetry competition. In celebration of disability pride month and comic con season, we want to ask: what masks do you wear every day? Whether at work, with family, at a convention, or even in front of the mirror, we constantly hide a portion of ourselves behind a “mask”. For those with disabilities, the mask isn’t always one that can be removed without discomfort; however, in reclaiming pride for those with disabilities, the mask becomes a marker of identity, allowing them to more visibly display their incongruence with a world constructed without disabilities accommodations in mind. However you wear your mask, bring it on down to Cafe Calypso Downtown on July 29th and share your poetry in our competition! General admission to watch is free, and entry to the competition is $5. We will also hand out an exclusive print from the talented Bat Otter to the best costume in the room, so test your convention outfits and join in on the fun!
