Judge #3:
Sister Mariposa Patriota
Nun by vocation, veteran by service, leather creature by choice, and professional rabble-rouser for a good cause. Sister Mariposa Patriota, "The All-American Charity W***e," has been blessing the masses, collecting donations, causing holy mischief, and spreading joy since joining the Los Angeles Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence in October 2010. Now an Emeritus Sister living deep in the heart of South Texas, Mariposa continues to serve their community with equal parts compassion, advocacy, glitter, and just a touch of chaos.
When not in a face full of paint and a fabulous habit, Mariposa is known as Apolonio E. Muñoz III, AKA Señor Apple, a disabled combat Army veteran who has somehow managed to become both a nun of many habits and a wearer of even more hats.
Over the years, Apple has served on countless nonprofit boards and volunteered thousands of hours throughout Southern California and South Texas. Some people collect stamps. Apple apparently collects leadership positions, community projects, and reasons to stay busy.
A longtime member of the leather, bear, veteran, and LGBTQ+ communities, Mariposa/Apple has become a passionate advocate for those who don't always get a seat at the table, especially Latinos, people of color, drag performers, and other voices too often left out of the conversation. As they often say:
"We're all one big kinky, perverted, and sometimes dysfunctional family, and we all deserve to be loved, seen, and heard."
Over the years, Mariposa/Apple has served in roles including Advisor to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, Board Secretary of the LA Leather Coalition, National Vice President of the Veterans Leather Alliance, and Senior Vice Commander of Texas VFW District 6. They also hold the distinct honor of being the first Nun to join Men of ONYX, becoming a member of the SoCal/Southwest Chapter and proudly maintaining alumni status today.
After co-producing both the Mr. Sister Leather Contest and the Mr. LA Leather Contest, Mariposa eventually decided they'd spent enough time backstage holding clipboards and wrangling titleholders. After officially drinking the contest Kool-Aid, they competed in the 2017 California Drummer Contest and the 2018 Mr. West Coast Olympus Leather Contest, where they earned First Runner-Up honors and discovered firsthand that contest life is equal parts glamour, stress, caffeine, and community.
In December 2019, Mariposa/Apple captured the title of Mr. Sanctuary Leather 2020, representing Sanctuary Studios LAX, the largest adult dungeon west of the Mississippi. Thanks to impeccable timing and a global pandemic, they went on to become the longest-serving Mr. Sanctuary Leather, proudly carrying the title from 2020 through 2024.
These days, between community service, advocacy work, and ensuring the forces of fun remain adequately funded, Mariposa/Apple is pursuing a Master of Social Work (MSW). Their goal is to continue fighting for their communities in even more spaces, from nonprofits and government agencies to public policy and, perhaps someday, elected office. After all, if you've survived the Army, the Sisters, leather contests, and nonprofit board meetings, how hard can politics be?
At the end of the day, Mariposa remains committed to one simple belief: that people deserve dignity, community, and a chance to thrive exactly as they are. The rest is just sequins, service, leather, military bearing, and a healthy amount of glitter-powered activism.
