The conversation begins in the galleries.

On Thursday, September 10, at 6:30 PM, join us for a special panel inspired by El Pasado Mío / My Own Past: Afrodescendant Contributions to Cuban Art and Afrocubanismo: Highlights from the Ramón and Nercys Cernuda Collection.

This program brings together scholars and artists to explore Afro-Cuban art, history, and memory, and the contributions of Afrodescendant communities to Cuban art.

Moderated by Dr. Michael J. Bustamante (University of Miami), the panel features Dr. Alejandro de la Fuente (Harvard University), Dr. Bárbaro Martínez-Ruiz (Indiana University Bloomington), and artist and professor Juana Valdés (University of Massachusetts Amherst).

At our Family Art Workshops, young artists and their families explore works in the Lowe’s galleries before turning what they see, feel, and discover into creations of their own. 🎨

For our next workshop, we’re taking inspiration from Alexandre Arrechea’s striking, mask-like works on view in El Pasado Mío. Together, families will look closely, explore the stories and ideas behind the art, and get creative through hands-on artmaking.

Join us on Thursday, September 10, at 6:30 PM for a thought-provoking conversation inspired by the Lowe’s current exhibitions, El Pasado Mío / My Own Past: Afrodescendant Contributions to Cuban Art and Afrocubanismo: Highlights from the Ramón and Nercys Cernuda Collection.

Presented by the Lowe Art Museum in partnership with the Cuban Heritage Collection at the University of Miami Libraries, the conversation will be moderated by Dr. Michael J. Bustamante (University of Miami) and will bring together Dr. Alejandro de la Fuente (Harvard University), Dr. Bárbaro Martínez-Ruiz (Indiana University Bloomington), and artist and professor Juana Valdés (University of Massachusetts Amherst).

Together, they will explore Afro-Cuban art, history, and memory, highlighting the contributions of Afrodescendant communities and the ways these histories continue to shape our understanding of Cuban art today.

Where art meets engineering ✨

This past Tuesday, the Lowe welcomed renowned glass artist Tom Patti for a special lecture exploring over five decades of innovation across art, materials science, and engineering. Students and faculty gained rare insight into Patti’s pioneering approach to glass, using industrial materials to create works that play with light, perception, and structure.

Engaging directly with engineering students, Patti shared how collaborations with industry leaders and his background in design have shaped a career that pushes glass beyond craft into architectural and engineered applications.

Last night, Patti continued the conversation during the Myrna and Sheldon Palley Glass Artist Lecture Series, A Visual Path to Discovery, offering the community an even deeper look into his creative process.

Thank you to Tom Patti for sharing his time, insight, and inspiring work with our students and community.

These programs reflect our continued commitment to interdisciplinary learning, bringing together art, science, and new ways of thinking.
