Five years ago today on my timeline. And so many things have changed. Charlie and RJ are no longer playing. Cleve Oliver has left us, and Jean has moved into assisted living. Raven Welch is all grown up and working as a nurse. And the jam is on hiatus until it's safe for all us old folks to gather in the same room again. But the song remains the same. And oh, what a song it is! (Thank you, Peter Rowan and Bill Monroe!)

For some of us, this one will bring back memories. And oh, how we miss those two great banjo players.

Throwback Thursday

On May 17, 1974, at Ducktown Elementary, the PTO-sponsored variety show went on for three hours. It featured a little of everything, from a solo vocal performance by four-year-old Charlie Carpenter to the harmonica stylings of the TCC safety department’s Glenn Sparks. This photograph from the June edition of the TC Topics features a performance by four of the Basin’s favorite local musicians, all of whom were still making music several decades later. From left to right: Deb Arp, Troy Simonds, Herman Boring, and Lorena Sosebee, with emcee Dr. Bill Lee in the background. Cowboy boots and all.

Those were the days, my friends. Here's our own George Jones on lead vocal, with the late and much-lamented Cleve Oliver on harmony. George is in Seattle now, and Cleve is undoubtedly playing with that great big band in the sky, but the music goes on.

But not right now. We'll resume the Tuesday-night jam as soon as we can gather safely. Until then, take care and stay safe, all of you.

Thanks to Robbie Posner and Sally for this trip down memory lane.

Out of a superabundance of caution, we've decided to cancel the 3/17 jam. Please pass the word to your friends who aren't on Facebook. We may decide to cancel on 3/31, depending on the situation then. Y'all take care of yourselves and leave some toilet paper for the rest of us. ♥️

Tomorrow night's jam (Tuesday, 1/21) has been canceled due to the cold weather. Stay warm, and we'll see y'all on February 4!
