In addition to Virginia, these specific pattern of sleevebuttons are commonly found in an archeological context throughout the former colonies and frontier areas including NY, NJ, PA, RI, MA, CT, VT, WV, GA, NC, SC, OH, IN, IL, MI, and WI. Sleevebuttons have been proven time and again to not be a “wealthy” accessory as some might suggest, but rather an accessory in common usage across many demographics whether you were indigenous, enslaved, country, or metropolitan.

Another iconographic ring from the archives back in production and as you can always expect, a faithful copy of the original 1745-1775 ring. Many years ago, a version of this ring was produced by Chuck Leonard for those who remember him and enough time has passed that this needed to be revisited.

History: The original was found at the Oneida town of Onaquaga near Windsor NY. This substantial town was initially established as an Oneida settlement by those seeking an alternative to the power politics of Kanawalohale and Old Oneida. However, from the end of the 17th century onwards it became an immigration destination for displaced Indians from a wide range of tribes. The Tuscaroras settled at Onaquaga in the early 18th century, and in the decades before the Revolution they were joined by Stockbridge Indians, Delawares, Shawnees, Miamis, Tutelos, Nanticokes, and others. The relationship between this town and the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Six Nations was a symbiotic one: displaced peoples gained a home, and the Haudenosaunee bolstered their southern buffer zone against colonial encroachment. Between 1743 and 1775, Onaquaga was evangelized by missionaries from the New England Company (NEC), including Elihu Spencer, Gideon Hawley.

While going through research photos on my devices going back to my trip to Tippecanoe County Historical Association in 2022, I came across a rather unusual iconographic “Jesuit” ring associated with Ouiatenon that I will be making on a limited basis. As should be expected, this is a faithful copy of the original. The fleur de lis is not a typical iconographic device found on these rings which makes it even more unique in the material culture of that region. There are a number of sizes on hand however as we continue to prepare for the upcoming season, it will not be a problem to add your size to the production run if you select to order.

As always, we don’t just buy parts and generic stamps to “make do” when pursuing a historical project. Yes, some tools are still available such as gravers and die sinking chisels. Most of which can be used as is or modified if necessary. In the case of steel stamps, each one must be made by hand to the exacting standard of the original impression. The stamped hearts on originals are not the outlined “clip art” heart variety that you’ve seen over the years on some attempts to mimic period pieces. Requests on historic iconographic rings are always entertained, especially if you have a favorite from your region or specific home historic site.

Iconographic “Jesuit” rings are back in production. Many of you asked for larger sizes, so provisions have been made.

These are one of those items that have a wide range of options and possibilities including dozens of pattern and variations, size, and more importantly timeline. Those shown represent rings of a period after Jesuit presence began to wane however religious iconography remained present in the design elements of these rings. We do make a few 17th century variants that are true “Jesuit” rings for those who interpret the period of 1630-1690. In either case, DM us here for ordering.

PayPal or Venmo, $25 each plus shipping.

***Important note*** Having an accurate ring size is always helpful, however if you need help figuring that out, we can help. Also consider the time period you portray so appropriate options can be discussed.

Many thanks to those who have been waiting patiently for these. Beyond existing orders, there are currently (2) Pre-1767 French gorget available. These are wrought from brass with a proper edge rolled over a wire core for strength, faithfully copied from those depicted in 18th century portraits, ethnographic, and archeological examples.

Basic tutorial on installing your shirt buckles. Hard to believe it’s been 10 years

Whether you're applying a shirt-buckle, ring, or pierced trade silver brooch, the method of fastening is the same. Many have asked for instructions either out of necessity or curiosity, but hopefully this photo tutorial offers a quick reliable reference guide. It's as simple as drawing the fabric through the middle and catching 1/8" to 1/4" of fabric with the hinged pin, with care taken not to pick too much or too little. Thickness of your garment material should always be accounted for and should not be too thick that material cannot be drawn through the opening. For those needing shirt buckles, we have a couple of styles on hand (heart/luckenbooth depicted and jeweled ring) and will post on them soon.

***updated*** for Tuesday Feb 10th, adjusted quantities, including postal deadlines (Wed. 2/10) for gift giving.

This will serve as an offering as well as some reassurance for those of you have been asking for shirt buckles. Silver continues to be a bit crazy lately and rather than just throw my hands up in the face of this unstable market, I’m still refusing to compromise in my pursuit of historical accuracy until the market stabilizes again. In the meantime for your consideration, these are made in hardened brass and whited (tinned) in the same historic manner as our Gen IV fine and Medium dressing pins (also in stock). Just to reiterate and considering the changes to the postal service, tomorrow is the deadline for Priority if you need them in time for your Valentine.

Remaining stock as of rhis afternoon:
6-round*
5-hearts*

For scale, the round brooches are approximately 1” in diameter.
$40 each plus shipping
PayPal or Venmo

*I’ll still be making them in silver on request, however with precious metals they will be subject to daily spot market prices. PM for detailsg
