Ellie Pink, who graduated from Cooperstown High School, is making a short film "Too Late" starring Barbara Bayes. Set over the course of a single late-summer day, this film is a quiet portrait of love, sacrifice, and the invisible labor of caregiving. It explores the tenderness, loneliness, humor, and resilience that exist within small rural communities — places often overlooked, but filled with lives of deep emotional complexity.

“To see Ellie grow up and pursue a career in film gives me such joy,” Bayes told the Freeman's Journal recently. “And I am delighted to shoot a film in my own backyard.”

Pink's short film "Miss Fortune" won multiple national and international awards. She was mentored by Sundance Special Jury Prize-winning director Jan Egleson and trained as a casting director under Judy Henderson. Pink was one of several student filmmakers who made the short film "Utica: A Town That Loves Refugees,” which was shown at Film Days in 2019.

Some of you may remember the documentary WRITTEN ON THE LANDSCAPE: MYSTERIES BEYOND CHACO CANYON (Anna Sofaer, 2024, USA, 57 minutes), which we screened in 2024.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation reports the area is under renewed threat as the Bureau of Land Management is seeking to revoke the public order that protects this area from oil and call development.

Chaco Culture National Historical Park sits within the greater landscape known as Chaco Canyon — a place rich with Indigenous cultural history and sacred sites as well as magnificent views, day or night.

The National Trust named the Greater Chaco Cultural Landscape to our list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places back in 2011.

Today, the site faces renewed threats. From April 1 to April 7, 2026, the Department of the Interior opened a public comment period on a Bureau of Land Management proposal to revoke the public order that protects this area from oil and gas development.

The National Trust submitted comments urging BLM “to pause, slow down, and engage in a process of public dialogue, tribal consultation, and additional study prior to taking any action.”
