This is all so true. ❤️
Happy Friday!
Behind every healthy puppy are years of dedication, countless hours of research, sleepless nights, difficult decisions, and an unwavering commitment to improving the breed we love.
Responsible breeding is so much more than simply putting two dogs together and hoping for puppies. It begins long before the breeding ever takes place—with researching pedigrees, health testing, evaluating structure and temperament, carefully planning pairings, monitoring pregnancies, preparing for the unexpected, and understanding that sometimes things don't go according to plan, etc.
Because when you choose to bring new lives into the world, you also take on the responsibility of doing everything you can to give them the healthiest, strongest, and best possible start. And sometimes, that responsibility comes with difficult decisions and heartbreaking moments that no breeder ever wants to face.
Mom is in active labor, you've been watching her for hours, something doesn't seem right, and you're calling your veterinarian at 3:00 AM because her labor has stalled. You're watching the clock, watching Mom, watching every little movement, and wondering, “Is this normal, or do we need to go?” 😳🐾
And yes... sometimes that means loading everyone up and making another trip to the vet in the middle of the night. Then there are the moments no breeder ever wants—the heartbreak of losing a stillborn puppy, while knowing you still have an entire litter and Mom who need you.
Watching that tiny puppy finally take that first breath... hearing that little cry... those are moments you never forget. 🙏❤️ And praise the Lord, we've been blessed to do it a few times.
And don't forget Mom. She's not just the one giving birth; she's your patient too. She needs monitoring, nutrition, hydration, rest, and care. Sometimes complications continue after delivery. Maybe she develops mastitis, and suddenly it's...
“Oh goodness... another trip to the vet!” 🫣
And when I say sleepless nights, I mean REALLY sleepless nights. I mean waking up EVERY. SINGLE. HOUR because Mom is telling you one of her puppies has wandered too far away, and she needs you to get him NOW. 😂 So you get up, find the puppy, make sure he's warm and okay, put him right back where Mom wants him...
You finally crawl back into bed.
Five minutes later...
“Hey! He's over there again!” Back up you go.
Find puppy.
Put puppy back.
Get back in bed.
Up. Down. Up. Down. Up. Down.
“Ohhh... finally. It’s quiet. I can get some sleep for a few minutes.” Closes eyes.
“WHIIIIINE.” 😳 Seriously?
She doesn't care that you're exhausted. She doesn't care that it's 2:47 AM. She just gave birth to these little ones and apparently has decided you are now on staff.
“Excuse me, Hooman... that puppy is over there.
I don't care if you were sleeping.
Get to work.” 😂🐾 So... up you go.
Find puppy.
Put puppy back.
Make sure everyone is warm.
Make sure Mom is comfortable.
Get back in bed.
At some point you're not even sure if you're raising puppies or training for the Olympic sleep-deprivation team. 😂🐾
At this point, you're exhausted, running on coffee and adrenaline, and asking yourself... “Remind me again why I’m still in this business?” 😂☕️ Oh yeah... THAT'S why. ❤️
It's exhausting. You know you'll be dragging the next morning, but you do it anyway because Mom is counting on you, and those tiny puppies depend on you. And that's just one night. 😂
Buckle up, Buttercup... because you'll be doing this for the next TWO WEEKS. 😴🐾
This is the part people don't see.
And then there is the glamorous side of puppy raising nobody puts on Instagram. 😂
The messy cleanup.
Cleaning the potty box multiple times a day.
Sanitizing EVERYTHING.
Washing toys. (We’ve already replaced our washing machine, y'all!)
Washing bedding.
Cleaning floors.
Bathing puppies.
Trimming tiny little nails.
And cleaning puppies up after every messy meal.
And don't even get me started on litter box training and the endless p**p smear campaign! You clean the potty box, turn around for approximately 30 seconds, and somehow there's p**p on the floor, p**p on the walls, p**p on their paws, and one innocent-looking puppy proudly sporting a fresh coat of it. HOW?! I'm convinced they hold secret meetings to coordinate these attacks.
And mealtime? It's an event. A wrestling match. A full-blown mud brawl. 😂 Oh, that's a whole different disaster! They don't just eat their food; apparently, eating isn't just a meal for a puppy.—they walk through it, roll in it, sit in it, step on each other with it, and somehow manage to wear half of it like they're modeling the latest puppy fashion line. By the time they're finished, everyone needs a bath, the floor needs mopping, the bedding needs washing, and I'm standing there wondering why I bothered cleaning anything in the first place. Welcome to responsible breeding, where the laundry never ends, the mop is your best friend, and you're pretty sure you've cleaned the same p**p off the same puppy THREE TIMES in the last ten minutes! 🐾😂
So you clean them up...
It's not glamorous. It's not always pretty. And some days you wonder how one litter of puppies can create that much laundry.
But it's part of the job. It means investing in veterinary care, testing, training, nutrition, enrichment, socialization, and proper puppy development—often long before a puppy ever goes home.
It means answering endless questions, educating families, carefully matching puppies to the right homes, staying available after the sale, and sometimes saying no when a home or situation isn't the right fit.
It means carrying the weight of every puppy you produce long after they leave your home—hoping you've prepared them well, chosen the right family, and given them the best possible foundation for the life ahead. And sometimes, responsible breeding means putting your heart aside and making choices that are best for the dogs, even when those choices are difficult, expensive, or emotionally painful.
This journey isn't unique to one breed—it's the reality for responsible breeders everywhere. ❤️🐾
There are incredible highs, but there are also heartbreaking lows. Sometimes a carefully planned breeding you've waited months—or even years—for doesn't take. Sometimes puppies are born sleeping. Sometimes you fight around the clock to save a fading newborn, celebrating every tiny victory while preparing your heart for the possibility of loss.
We've experienced empty whelping boxes, stillborn puppies, fading puppies, and the joy of bringing little ones back from the brink. Every loss leaves a mark, and every success reminds us why we keep going.
Breeding isn't just about producing puppies. It's about pouring your heart, time, knowledge, and soul into every decision, every litter, and every life entrusted to your care.
The heartbreak is real, but so is the purpose. We learn. We grow. We grieve. We celebrate. And through it all, we remain committed to moving forward, always striving to do better for the dogs we love.
