Sunday Drive Recording Studio

Sunday Drive Recording Studio The centerpiece of the studio is a special API 2448—serial number 001.

Sunday Drive is a professional multitrack recording studio in rural Tennessee, sporting a collection of high end equipment and instruments, dedicated to audio excellence and artistic exploration. Nestled atop a hill on the Cumberland Plateau, Sunday Drive is home to an ever-growing array of classic instruments from the 40s, 50s, and 60s up through today—and a gear list unlike anything else outside

Nashville. Designed by Steven Durr (Mark Ronson, Dan Auerbach/Easy Eye Sound, Lenny Kravitz, Sear Sound), the seventeen foot ceiling height of the live room has a classic lively tone while the two iso booths are focused and natural. The console was specifically built for the NAMM show for the unveiling, then purchased by Vintage King for the Nashville showroom before coming here to live—24 inputs of discrete, transformer balanced API quality with a 550A or 560 EQ on tap on every channel, and the Final Touch automation system. Outboard racks are filled with every flavor of tone-tweaking and dynamics-shaping that discerning engineers and producers look for. The microphone locker is stocked with everything from the standards of Neumann, AKG, and Telefunken to indispensable workhorses like Shure, Beyerdynamic, Sony, and Coles—and there's always a bevy of vintage instruments, amplifiers, and drums to choose from!

Doesn’t feel like work when folks are playing like this…

Sometimes it’s cool to just solo things and hear what’s happening under all the layers. Raniece Can wrote this killer bridge that practically screamed for these close-harmony horn swells we used to hear on all those Stax records.

Something’s cooking over here for Raniece Can and I can’t wait to share! It’s so wonderful when someone writes a song that just works right off the bat—nothing but fun to be had.

So someone here at Sunday Drive let the google workspaces subscription lapse because he snoozed the email into oblivion, ignorant of the fact that it would suspend the studio email. That person was me. I did it.

Sorry if you emailed in the last week or tried to use the studio website to contact us—reach out again and I’ll make it up to you!

I want to say a huge thank you to all the new followers of the studio—you're the reason Sunday Drive exists.

If you know a talent in the Upper Cumberland who needs to be recorded, would you consider sharing the studio? We're nearing 1,000 followers on our Instagram—but we could use more exposure on Facebook.

Thanks again!

Day One of rhythm section tracking down for Steep Creek. These guys were a blast to record—they blew through 10 songs in 10 hours, a testament to what a band can do when they’ve been living in the shed before coming to the studio.

Stay tuned as this record continues.

If there’s anyone who embodies the spirit of Sunday Drive, it’s Steve Durr.

I was so excited to tell Jason and Sheila about him, his incredible continuing legacy, and the way he instantly understood what I hoped to bring to the Upper Cumberland.
