Inflexion: Starter Studio is a mixed use residential and commercial complex that takes the typical live/work occupancy and changes the narrative to live/make. The goal of this project is to provide a space that will jumpstart opportunities for individuals with a passion for making. In an area that attracts retail, there is an opportunity to encourage local craft and engage the overall community by providing affordable housing, tools for creating, and spaces to engage community and craft in one space.

Inhabiting energies, an experiential play scape that explores the idea: What if smoke was the inhabitant of the space?

What would an architecture look like that catered to or opposed the fluid movements of smoke? How can smoke be filtered, captured, or released in order to fill and shape a space? What happens when the human becomes the secondary occupant? In our discoveries, that space becomes a hub of energies. The smoke becomes kinetic energy, light, sound, movement. The space can be imagined as both residential and community based. Perhaps a gallery and artist residence where the net paths and light wells foster creativity and movement. Perhaps a sort of airbnb and playscape. Perhaps a community event space. When the “smoke” is the primary occupant, what the space is labeled becomes secondary and fluid.

Hand drawn back elevation and section of Alvar Aalto’s Otaniemi Strip mall in Helsinki, Finland. This project took skill, craft, and dedication. I thoroughly enjoyed studying and measuring this building to create a document that is both quantitive in it’s accuracy and beautiful in it’s aesthetics.
