2026 YouTube Monetization Checklist for Music Channels
For a music channel like yours, there are 2 levels to unlock in 2026 — and you want to hit them in order.
1. The Two YPP Tiers
Level 1: Fan Funding Early Access — Super Thanks, Super Chat, Memberships
You get this at:
500 subscribers
3 public uploads in the last 90 days
3,000 watch hours in the last 12 months OR 3M Shorts views in the last 90 days
This does NOT give you ad revenue yet, but it unlocks everything fans can pay for. For music, this is huge — Super Thanks is that heart icon on your videos where people tip $2-$50.
Level 2: Full Monetization — Ad Revenue
1,000 subscribers
4,000 public watch hours in the last 12 months OR 10M public Shorts views in the last 90 days
This unlocks watch page ads, Shorts ads revenue share, and everything from Level 1.
Both tiers require:
No active Community Guidelines strikes
2-Step Verification turned on
Linked AdSense account
You pass YouTube's Originality + Advertiser-Friendly review
2. The Music Channel Checklist (Where Most Get Rejected)
YouTube is strictest on music channels for "Reused Content."
Originals: You are clear. You own the beat, hook, and master — you're good for monetization.
Covers / Remixes / Type Beats: If you use someone else's beat or instrumental, you need a license AND you need to add significant original transformation. Just rapping over a free YouTube beat with no license = monetization rejected, even if you hit the hours.
No Content ID trap: If your distributor already put your song in Content ID, don't re-upload the same audio with a static image — YouTube sees it as reused.
Before you apply: Delete or private any videos with uncleared third-party music, compilations of other artists, or lyric videos using someone else's song.
3. Fastest Path to Ads + Super Thanks for Get Money Rec
Don't try to get 4,000 hours with only Shorts. Use them together:
For the 500 / Early Access in 30-45 days:
Post 3 long-form videos now (official video, behind-the-scenes, visualizer) — this checks the 3-upload box.
Post 1 Short per day from those long videos — hook, chorus, studio clip. Shorts are how you get from 0 to 500 subs fastest.
Turn on Advanced Settings > Allow Super Thanks as soon as you get invited. It's under Monetization > Supers.
For the 1,000 / 4,000 hours:
Long-form is still king for watch hours. One 4-minute video watched all the way through by 60,000 people = 4,000 hours.
Formula: Shorts = Subscribers, Long-form = Watch Hours. Make every Short point to the full video: "Full video on my channel."
Go live for 1 hour a week — live watch hours count and Super Chat works instantly once you're in Early Access.
