Sometimes, the shows we choose are the ones we think we want to tell. And sometimes, a show is given to us and becomes exactly the one we needed.
What began as a production I was stepping into quickly became a story I fell completely in love with. From the very first rehearsal I wanted to lean into what makes this story so special…the story itself. Focusing on the acting, the relationships, the emotions, and the moments that make these characters feel real rather than letting the fairytale of the story overshadow the people within it. Over the last 7 weeks we worked to find the heart in every scene and the truth behind every line. To say the kids understood the assignment is an understatement. Their maturity level when processing this show was incredible to watch. We are the first to ever do this one in the area! With no movie or Netflix series to go off of it meant truly doing the work on their behalf.
Between the Lines is a story about finding your voice, discovering where you belong, and realizing that you don't have to become someone else to be worthy of being heard. Those are messages that resonate deeply, especially for young people navigating a world that is constantly telling them who they should be. They brought vulnerability, humor, heart, and so much honesty to the stage this weekend. I hope if you got to see the show that you laughed with these characters, hurt with them, rooted for them, and perhaps recognized a little bit of yourself somewhere between the lines.
While doing the mega hit title can be a blast, sometimes you find a true gem in the unknown.
The chapter has closed and we look forward to all of the beautiful stories we get to tell next season.
