Coco Cabrel performs her one-woman Flamenco-themed shows to defend against bullying, build powerful self-image, and learn how to share hearts and get fit at schools across the country; she is also the resident Flamenco teacher at the Kareli School of Folklorico in Los Angeles. Her students are appearing tonight after studying with her for just under one year. Her recent performances include guest appearances at the Los Angeles International Folklorico Festival at Downey Theatre, here at the Fusion Performing Dance Academy showcases and collaborative events at First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood and CityLight LA.
Coco grew up studying ballet and tap while performing Hawaiian, Tahitian, and Filipino dance professionally. After getting her MD and performing in productions at Northwestern University, Coco began Flamenco with Teresa Cullen and Los Preferidos Spanish Dance Company in Chicago, where she quickly rose to being cast as Desdemona in Ciro’s Flamenco ballet, “Otelo.” She worked one-on-one with masters Ciro, Paco Romero, Jose Granero, and Lola Greco in Madrid and Jerez, Spain; Manolo Rivera and Luis Montero in her hometown of New York City; Vida Peral in Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Antonio Vargas and Cristian Almodovar in Chicago, IL; and she workshopped with Marija Temo, Omayra Amaya, Juana Amaya, and Yolanda Heredia in Albuquerque, NM. While performing and teaching through her own dance company, Encuentro, Coco was invited to build a Flamenco dance program at the University of New Mexico – Taos, as well as rebuild their concurrent credit program with Taos High School.
Coco is thankful to God for her return to Fusion Performing Dance Academy’s Spring Showcase, as well as for her calling to use the history, arte, and duende of Flamenco to tell healing stories that help audience members to feel seen.
