Every kid in Dolly Parton's Imagination Library gets the same first book.

The Little Engine That Could, with their name printed on it, in the mail, once a month from birth until they turn five, and it costs the family nothing.

That has been landing in Kaukauna and Kimberly and Seymour for years. Manitowoc County alone has mailed close to 24,000 of them.

She built the whole program as a tribute to her father.

Around 45,000 Wisconsin kids are enrolled this morning. That number did not change on Tuesday.

Dolly Parton died at 80.

The 77th Annual Amery Fall Festival is back, and this year it's extra special as we celebrate America's 250th anniversary alongside our own hometown tradition. Four days of free live music, the Grande Parade, a quilt show, carnival rides, a 5K, and enough food trucks to keep you fueled all weekend.

Most people wander in around five, which is how most people miss Paul Dietrich.

He opens Saturday at two with the Elemental Quartet, four players, no horn section, nothing to hide behind.

Dietrich spends most of his year in Madison writing for eighteen piece bands, and this is what he does when he strips all of that away.

It is the quietest set on the schedule, and quiet does not survive a six o'clock crowd.

Show up at two and let the weekend build from there.

Friday afternoon at Regner Park, one family basically owns the stage from three o'clock until eight.

The Goodtime Dutchmen play an hour, then Copper Box, then the Dutchmen again, then Copper Box until 8.

Michelle Jerabek of Copper Box came up playing in the Goodtime Dutchmen, which is her dad's band.

Copper Box has been running polka through rock and blues out of Oshkosh since 2002, with a button accordion sitting in the middle of all of it.

Everybody is planning around Saturday night.

Friday at four is the set people will be talking about on the drive home.

Rhonda Vincent has eight Female Vocalist of the Year trophies from the IBMA, a Grammy, and a Grand Ole Opry membership she waited 345 days to be inducted into.

She plays Rosholt on Friday and only Friday.

So if you take Saturday because Saturday sounds like the bigger night, you will be hearing about this one from your friends until next August.

Friday night at the Good Neighbor Festival is the move this year.

Gates at 5, Kiddie Parade at 5:30, and then Boogie and the Yo-Yoz take the main stage and play until the carnival lights are the only thing brighter.

That band has been turning Wisconsin festival crowds loose for decades, and a hometown fest on a Friday is exactly their element.

Free to walk in.

Come for the parade, stay until they shut it down.

A free concert every week for five months is a lot of chances to finally see live music.

Live in the Garden at Badger State Brewing takes away every excuse.

No ticket. No planning. No driving across the state.

Just show up on a Friday, get a beer, hit the food truck, and let whoever is on the stage that week surprise you.

Wandering the State Fair is not a strategy.

It is how you end up on Grandstand Avenue at three in the afternoon holding a cream puff with no idea what to do next.

That is not the fair coming up short. That is the fair being enormous.

Alpine Valley is one of the best places in the country to see a show, and most of the year it just sits empty out in the East Troy hills.

On August 21 it comes alive for the Outlaw Music Festival.

Willie Nelson and Family, the Avett Brothers, Lukas Nelson, and Sierra Hull, all on that giant hillside stage under an open sky.

Get a lawn spot, bring a blanket, and watch the sun drop behind the amphitheater.

There is no better summer night in Wisconsin than one on that hill.

Gospel groups drive in from all over the country for the Voices of Peace Gospel Fest, and a few of the best are from right around here.

The Garms Family comes over from Arkansaw.

The Rocke Brothers make the short trip from Hortonville.

And Voices of Peace, the group that started the whole thing, is out of Potter.

Fifteen groups in all, two days, in a little park in Hilbert.

Come hear the home team hold their own against the national acts.
