Our featured Artist MahLeah Cochran says "I feel things deeply; I often ponder the state of humanity, the struggles of our world and the outlook for our collective future. My art is an expression of my emotions, thoughts and passions. I express myself outwardly on canvas in color and texture. This is deeply gratifying for me as it allows me to share with others, my innermost feelings.
I choose to use acrylic paints for its quick drying time. This enables me to create layers on canvas. This helps me demonstrate complexity. I use everyday kitchen items, recycled cardboard and many other tools to create original forms and textures in my art. I enjoy the journey of painting new pieces. There is a thrill of discovering what my work will yield next. It's what keeps me engaged.
I paint to inspire, challenge, and calm the soul.

Henry Hess is a Franklinton based artist who began working from his Chromedge studio at the age of 14.
Despite living his entire life in the new millennium, his tastes are decidedly 20th century. Through mediums of paper, canvas, wood, paint and marker he brings to life hundreds of classic movie scenes and characters.
His process begins with endless hours of viewing. His obsessive watching of movies, such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Wizard of Oz, and Marry Poppins, occurs in many stops and starts. He watches a scene over and over, studying a set detail or costume. When he sets out to draw or paint, he will create an entire contour of the figure in black, and then finish the line details within. The figures are typically facing forward, rigid in their posture. Hess will then bring the figures to life with color. They are more than characters to Hess they are friends who infuse him with a passion to create.
His fervor to craft a new world for himself is not dictated from the outside, but rather from within. Hess has created small, medium and life-sized illustrations and is rarely constrained by size. His largest piece to date was a 100-foot commissioned billboard, Fabulous Franklinton. He has exhibited his work in 13 solo and 42 group exhibitions since emerging into the Columbus art scene.

I had a passion for figurative painting early in my life. My tools are oil and watercolor to capture moods and gestures of people. Several patrons have told me that that is what attracted them to my work.

Lisa Parks Godfrey is inspired to paint subjects that resonate with her on a personal level. As a representational artist, her favorite subjects are still life paintings that remind her of time spent with people close to her. She also enjoys painting images of her family and farms that have deep meaning to her family history. For this reason, each painting is in essence a testimony of life. Her entry point to painting began as an art collector, but her passion for creating art really began while working with children and adults with developmental disabilities in various art programs. Lisa has always admired painters who dedicate themselves to the artist’s journey. She hopes her work brings joy and color to the lives of others.

The goal of my work is to combine literary expression and visual art, thereby adding a transformative dimension to painting. The literal content includes quotes, lyrics, poetry and more, and the style and technique are uniquely hers, and considered a form of fresco secco.

“My inspiration as an artist comes from my desire to create work that is authentic. My paintings reflect the world around me, with the intention of portraying the pure beauty found in imperfection. A field of weeds and flowers, a desert landscape off the beaten path, an unkempt garden, are some examples of subjects that incorporate the dichotomy of what I seek to paint.
This is also exemplified in my process, where I begin each work with a rough sketch and a more muted palette. As I begin to work into the whole composition, I am able to more precisely isolate the focal point. It is my intention to paint the whole composition at once, in order to capture the true essence of the scene. As I am nearing completion, I begin to paint with bold color and thicker paint. I hope that in the end, my work communicates my belief that it is through imperfection that we find what is true and good.”

Artist Ryan Orewiler Orewiler.art says this piece is a detail from a vision I had during his first reiki session by White Canvas Bodywork. There were also other animals in his vision - a bear, dragon and a calm gray wolf.
The meaning of the white tiger has always intrigued people. Symbolizes spiritual enlightenment, extraordinary strength, and unwavering courage. White tigers were revered by ancient Indians as symbols of bravery, strength, war, resolve, intuition, and clairvoyance.

FRED FOCHTMAN
I am an oil painter, art restorer and painting instructor living in Columbus, Ohio. As a painter, I am interested in working from observation. Lately I have been painting quite a bit in the urban areas north and west of downtown Columbus. I focus my process on the measured arrangement of simplified shape and color within a composition. The subject matter that I seek out is often unremarkable but still contains the essential design elements that are important to me. “Franklinton View, East” was painted last year in the rapidly changing Franklinton neighborhood, west of downtown Columbus. Due to construction and urban decay, this painting and others from the neighborhood capture a view of the historic community that is quickly changing.

My mother's grandparents were Slovak immigrants who lived a traditional Eastern European life. They owned a large cattle farm in western Pennsylvania and from a young age I worked there doing chores and bailing hay with my cousins through many hot summers. Part of my youth was spent with my father in central Ohio. We lived in a rural area and my many relatives there were Appalachian transplants who were steeped in Appalachian tradition. During this time I labored outdoors, working with family and neighbors on area farms.
While attending Youngstown State University where I received my BFA, I spent a great deal of time at the Butler Institute of American Art. I was privileged to study original works of the Hudson River School and Regionalists such as Charles Ephraim Burchfield and Thomas Hart Benton. These works closely aligned with my life experiences and shaped my artistic vision.
I am represented by Fresh A.I.R. Gallery and my work can be found in many collections, including Columbia Gas corporate collection and Bricker and Eckler's Law collection.

I capture the energy and and intensity of colorful urban life with my use of color & light.
In The Wizard of Oz remember how you felt when the movie turned to color – that’s how I feel when I paint. I find art fascinating because it gives you the ability to actually see what someone else is thinking. After my kids were grown, I began painting in oils and acrylics. I have taken classes at CCAD, and classes with artist Michael McEwan who really broadened my perspective and abilities. I am a member of the German Village Art League. I was born in Columbus, Ohio, I live in German Village where I also have my studio.
