❓ What is a Micro Mosaic?

Micro Mosaics were originally created by the Vatican in the 1500’s to preserve paintings that were deteriorating. The paintings were completely reinterpreted in glass so they would last forever, resulting in this technique being termed “eternal paintings”. In the 1700’s, they began miniaturizing Italian architectural scenes as jewelry and selling them to tourists that were coming from Europe on what was called “The Grand Tour”.

❓ How are they made?

Micro mosaics, or Filato Romano, are an Italian technique, made of glass and developed in the the Vatican in the 1700’s as a way to preserve deteriorating paintings. Upon completion of the paintings, the artisans began experimenting with spun glass enamel threads, miniaturizing the paintings and setting them into jewelry. Some examples of micro mosaic jewelry can have as many as 1000 pieces per square inch!

💡 Want to create your own heirloom-quality jewelry?

Master glass artist, Joyce Slate will be at our studio over Memorial Day weekend, teaching her unique style blending old-world Italian techniques with modern designs. Under her tutelage, you get to design and make 2 micro mosaic pendants.

The best part? No experience necessary.

❓ DID YOU KNOW… One of the world’s most intricate art forms is nearly lost to history?

✨ Micro mosaics are only practiced today by only a handful of artists worldwide. Originally developed by the Vatican in the 1500s to preserve deteriorating paintings, these tiny masterpieces—like the one below—were recreated entirely in glass and became known as “eternal paintings” because their beauty could last forever.

Now YOU can learn this rare art form right here in Columbus. 🎉

Master glass artist Joyce Slate will be teaching an exclusive Micro Mosaic Jewelry Workshop at Columbus Glass Art Center May 25–29. In this hands-on class, you’ll design and create TWO stunning micro mosaic pendants while learning techniques few artists in the world still practice today.

✨ No experience needed
✨ All skill levels welcome
✨ Create wearable heirloom art

Only a couple spots remain for this rare opportunity. Don’t miss your chance to experience the art of “eternal paintings.”
