I woke up the other night with a sudden need to paint the March sisters from the novel Little Women.

If you are familiar with this story, can you tell who’s who?

Which sister do you identify with the most? As a younger sister, girly, and artist — I’ve always identified the most with Amy.

This painting is dripping with symbolism for each sister and the March family.

My new series “Faces & Florals” is NOW AVAILABLE! (www.andibray.com/store)🎨🌸

Recently I’ve been drawn to the theme of womanhood. It’s been encouraging to come into my studio at night to paint the next portrait and to be surrounded by these women. Most of these portraits are not of anyone in particular but rather an embodiment of common experiences and stories we share.

The face is not rendered so that the viewer may insert the details themselves and perhaps even see themselves in the piece.

I intentionally did not include eyes as the eyes are the window to the soul and you cannot know or understand a woman simply at face value. I removed the gaze altogether. The viewer needs to study the full artwork to learn more about her and to seek to find the intimacy and her story.

I want the viewer to have more questions than answers.

Women grow, bloom, and change several times in a lifetime. To “know” her is to stay curious.
