If you saw a quick picture of Sydney’s work online, you might mistake them for paintings. But part of the magic of her pieces is the fabric that she uses, each with its own texture and unique history - some dating back to the 1800s, some from feed sacks, some from Ireland, and more.

These antique utilitarian textiles - historically, predominantly used by women inside the home - are transformed to serve an exclusively aesthetic purpose, by dying, binding, stitching and stretching the material.

Working with antique, utilitarian textiles historically used in the home, Sydney transforms familiar materials through binding, stitching, and stretching. The resulting works explore tension, contrast, and the space between opposing emotions.

FRONTIER explores how our understanding of the people in our lives changes as we grow older. In childhood, our perspective is bound by our own experiences, the stories we hear, and the qualities we come to associate with them.

With age, we begin to discover additional and sometimes more complicated dimensions of their lives - a new “frontier” that was unexplored in our earlier years: their relationships, choices, histories, and the parts of themselves that existed beyond our experience.

The painting brings together ideas of memory, discovery, and reinvention, reflecting on how the people we know can continue to reveal new layers and complexities long after we thought we understood them.
