This is a reminder that auditions for “These Shining Lives” will be held tonight at 6:00 PM. PLEASE NOTE: The room for auditions has been changed from the Theatre to the upstairs Second Stage Theatre. There will be signs to guide you to the audition area. If you have not memorized an audition, that’s okay. Monologues will be available that you can read from. Also, if you are interested only in a technical or backstage position, you can come by and fill out a form and then leave or contact me (David Carter) at any time. Department Chairs in The Chair
The Theatre Department at The Mississippi University for Women presents Eugene Ionesco’s classic Absurd masterpiece, The Chairs. A tragic farce, it’s about an old man and old woman who live in a tower on an island. They are planning for a meeting that evening where the old man has hired an orator to deliver his message to the world that will save humanity. Guests soon start arriving and the couple bring in more and more chairs for them to sit on. As the guests arrive, and the room fills with chairs, the audience will notice immediately something odd about both the chairs and the guests. We won’t give away that oddity here, you will have to see the show to find out.
What sets this production apart is that the Old Woman is played by Dr. Julia Mortyakova, Chair of the Music Department and the Old Man is played by Professor David Carter, Chair of the Theatre Department, hence, the Chairs in The Chairs. This is Dr. Mortyakova’s second theatrical production, and it marks Professor Carter acting debut on the MUW stage after more 24 years serving as Designer and Technical Director.
The play is directed by Assistant Professor Kathy Newman.
The Chairs opens Thursday April 3, 8:00 p.m. as part of Homecoming weekend and continues Friday April 4, 7:00 p.m. & Saturday April 5 at 7:00 PM. The location is the Cromwell Communications Black Box Theatre, Corner of 10th St. at 6th Ave. South. The running time is approximately one hour without an intermission and admission is free. There will be a half-hour audience Q & A after the performance on Friday.
