An epic, city-wide collaboration, this co-production with the CAPA and Opera Columbus brings fresh energy to a beloved classic, as part of the celebration of 100 years of performing arts at the Palace Theatre!

Gilbert & Sullivan’s pirate ship docks in New Orleans in this jazzy, blues-infused reimagining of the crowd-pleasing classic. For audiences who loved the scale, electricity, and collaborative spirit of West Side Story in 2025, this is the must-see event of the season: a bold, genre-blending collaboration that brings opera, musical theatre, jazz and irresistible groove together in one wildly entertaining night. Featuring Columbus’ own Nina West — the acclaimed entertainer and television breakout star — as Ruth!

Pirates! The Penzance Musical fuses the wit and wordplay of Gilbert & Sullivan with Caribbean rhythms and French Quarter flair for an outrageously clever romp. Raised by pirates, Frederic believes his 21st birthday will finally set him free, until a twist of fate complicates everything. When he falls for Mabel, the spirited daughter of Major-General Stanley, pirates, policemen, and villagers collide in a whirlwind of swordplay, mistaken identities, and fast-flying patter. Led by a tongue-twisting Major General, a swaggering Pirate King, and a shipload of unforgettable musical numbers, this high-energy adventure overflows with romance, mischief, and off-the-charts fun, perfect for first-timers and Gilbert & Sullivan aficionados alike.

This production will be performed in English with English captions.

Over 30 years in comedy, Gary Gulman has established himself as an eminent performer and peerless writer.

A product of Boston, Gulman has been a scholarship college football player, an accountant, and a high school teacher. He has made countless television appearances as both a comedian and an actor.

Gulman has made five masterful TV specials including his most recent universally acclaimed stand-up specials for HBO Max, “Born On 3rd Base”, lending his meticulous comedic craft to the current Tale of Two Cities-esque wealth gap, and “The Great Depresh”, a tour de force look at mental illness, which is equal parts hilarious and inspiring.

Most recently, Gary made his off-broadway debut with a 5 week sold out run at The Lucille Lortel Theatre of his critically acclaimed one man show "Grandiloquent" directed by Tony Award winner Moritz von Stuelpnagel and produced by Mike & Carlee Productions ("Oh Mary").

In 2019, he appeared in the international blockbuster “Joker”. He can most recently be seen co-starring with Amy Schumer in the hit Hulu comedy series, “Life & Beth”.

Gary's first book published by Flatiron Books is titled “Misfit: Growing Up Awkward in the '80s”, a memoir based on his life from Kindergarten through Twelfth Grade. It was released in September of 2023. Amy Schumer called the book “laugh out loud funny and heartfelt” and MacArthur Fellowship recipient Adrian Nicole LeBlanc found it “exquisite, love-affirming and generous”.

Today, Gulman is one of the most popular touring comics, selling out theaters around the country including the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City. Gary lives in Harlem with his wife.
