Columbus Museum of Art is proud to announce a new garden project by TERREMOTO, the award-winning California-based landscape architecture and design studio, that will transform the exterior grounds of Columbus Museum of Art at The Pizzuti!

Marking TERREMOTO’s first garden project in the Midwest and first major museum commission, this initiative was developed in partnership with The Ohio State University Knowlton School of Architecture. For their project at The Pizzuti, TERREMOTO partnered with Ohio State Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture Michelle Franco, Knowlton School graduate student Dean Hjerpyn, and undergraduates Emma Baker, Ben Parker, and Haley Trolio, along with CMA curatorial staff, to reimagine the building’s exterior grounds and sculpture garden. The group collaboratively redesigned the garden’s planted areas, introducing over seventy species native to the region in a matrix based on indigenous prairie and woodland ecosystems. As a living landscape, TERREMOTO’s garden will continue to develop over time, inviting public engagement and reinforcing the idea that collective care and attention to the ecosystems it encompasses are as significant as the garden itself.

The collaboration between TERREMOTO, the Knowlton School, and CMA advances the museum’s mission to create spaces for inspiring contemplation that spark dialogue and energize communities.

The seventeenth-century Italian painter Artemisia Gentileschi (1593–1654) was the most renowned woman artist of her era and remains an enduring figure in feminist art history. This exhibition explores Gentileschi’s career in the Italian city of Naples, where she lived and worked beginning in 1630.

This month, we’re excited to highlight the work of Woo Chong Yung (1898–1989), a Chinese American artist who immigrated to Worthington, Ohio, in 1966.

Born to a wealthy family near Shanghai, Woo studied his family’s collection of Chinese literati painting. In the 1920s and 1930s, he exhibited his work internationally with other contemporary artists whose work engaged with the legacy of this tradition. Following the Communist takeover of Shanghai and the Great Leap Forward campaign, Woo faced the threat of political violence for his background and international ties. In this climate, Woo and his wife, Ying Mei, immigrated to the United States, where they joined their son, Tien-Hsing, a new faculty member at Ohio State University. In greater Columbus, Woo continued his artistic practice and created a community by teaching Chinese calligraphy and swordplay, exhibiting his work, contributing to local arts councils and ethnic festivals, and organizing exhibitions of imperial Chinese art.

See his work and learn more about the history of American artists of Asian descent in the exhibition "East of the Pacific: Making Histories of Asian American Art," on view until August 16.

Slow down and spend 30 seconds looking at this work of art in Gallery 6.
What do you notice?

Cecilia Beaux was a painter known for realistic portraits of her Gilded Age society patrons. When a local philanthropist, Gertrude Divine Webster, learned that Beaux was going to be visiting Columbus; she commissioned the artist to paint a portrait of her mother, Mrs. Richard Low Devine, born Susan Sophia Smith, and her King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, named Peggy.

Get an inside look at our collection every week with one of our Docent Educators at 10 Minutes on the Dot: Thursday at 6:00 PM, Friday at 11:00 AM, and Saturday at 2:00 PM.
