Calling all Jack Johnson fans: don't miss Jack Johnson: SURFILMUSIC on screen tomorrow at GFC 🏄‍♂️🎥🎶

Tickets: https://gatewayfilmcenter.org/movies/jack-johnson-surfilmusic-2026/

A new documentary chronicling Jack Johnson’s evolution from surfer to filmmaker to world-renowned musician. The film traces how Johnson’s early years making surf films with close friends became a foundation for a much broader creative life, capturing moments in and out of the water that later surfaced in his songwriting.

Blending rare footage from those formative surf films and Johnson’s personal and family archives with present-day reflections, the film weaves together how lived experience, friendship, and exploration shaped the sound and stories behind the music.

In a last-ditch attempt to get out of debt, Nick makes a series of radically frugal lifestyle choices without telling his girlfriend Marie that he’s going off the grid. After taking advice from a bike mechanic who lives out of a tent, Nick fixes up an old ten-speed using Goodwill parts and tools. Freed from costs and expectations, he discovers a sense of purpose and self-reliance as he commutes around town. But Marie starts to become suspicious of his erratic behavior, and Nick is torn between between committing to the woman he loves or devoting himself to a simpler existence.

Opening tomorrow at the Film Center: Hope, by director Na Hong-jin

In the remote South Korean village of Hope Harbor, police chief Bum-seok and officer Sung-ae are called to find a mysterious creature that has wreaked havoc on the village. In the nearby forest, a coterie of hunters, including Sung-ki set out to track the beast and find themselves hunted instead. But all is not as it seems, and perceptions can be misleading. What begins as ignorance plants the seed of disaster, escalating through human conflict into a tragedy of cosmic proportions.
