Home with the family? Hold your own Story Night!

The power of shared storytelling to soothe or spur us to action may be more crucial than ever, scientists say. Here's what happens in the brain when we feel swept away by a story, book or film.

Hey Story Clubbers, it's your host Harmony Cox here. Just thinking of you all because typically we would have a show tonight...but that isn't happening, of course. I'm working on figuring out how to do a virtual show and am hoping to get you all in the loop on that soon. In the meantime, just wanted to say we're thinking of you all and we can't wait to get back on stage soon. Hang in there, and keep taking care of each other.

In the meantime, I thought I'd share one of my favorite stories, from the storytelling podcast Snap Judgement. It's about serendipity, hustle, and the weird miracles that happen when you don't give up on yourself. Enjoy!

Story Club Columbus is on Hiatus until Further Notice

Hey friends. Boy, it’s been a week, huh? This message will probably not come as a shock to many of you, but please read on to the end.

Story Club Columbus is going on a hiatus until...well, it’s hard to say. There are a few factors that caused us to make this decision: Rambling House is closed until further notice, social distancing is the responsible thing to do for public health, and this is our only chance as a community to stop the spread early. I’m not going to mince words here because I think this is important: not making the decision to socially distance yourself from others means you are potentially taking someone else’s life in your hands. Our host is in a risk group for COVID-19, as are many of our performers, as are many performers in the city that you may or may not realize you are endangering with your presence if you’re infected. We love our live lit community in Columbus, and that’s why we want to keep it safe.

That being said, we love Story Club, and we love hanging out with you every month. We aren’t going anywhere. We’re waiting this out because it’s the right thing to do, but we plan to be back up on that stage as soon as it’s safe for us to do so. Here’s what we can tell you for now:

1. We will be waiting for bars/restaurants/other venues to reopen and for an all-clear from our public health offices to re-start the show. Hang tight till then.
2. We still intend to do Laugh Riot at a later date, as well as the other shows we’ve been planning. If you’re booked for a future show with us, we’ve been in touch, or we will be soon. Everything is delayed. Nothing is canceled. We’re too stubborn for that.
3. It is imperative for us to continue to support artists and performers in Columbus. We encourage you to throw your virtual tip money at folks who are working to sell art online, livestream performances, etc. If you have performed for us in the past and you want us to amplify your work right now, tell us! Let us help! We’re here for you.

We’re looking forward to seeing you again soon, Columbus. In the meantime, we’re all in this together. Let’s act like it.
