Meet Knecht Ruprecht, the Northern and Central German folklore figure who's like the grumpy cousin at the holiday party, dressed in dark robes, rocking bells, and lugging around a staff, a sack of ashes, and a birch switch because, why not?

Unlike Krampus, the half-beast party pooper, Ruprecht is Saint Nicholas's rough-around-the-edges sidekick who dishes out punishments that aren't about dragging you down to the underworld, just maybe a little timeout.

Belsnickel, found mainly in the German Palatinate region and carried over by immigrants to North America, represents an amalgamation of the giver and the punisher.

His name, a compound of pelz (fur/pelt) and Nickel (a diminutive for Nicholas), accurately describes his appearance: ragged, fur-clad, and often masked.

Belsnickel often visits houses before Christmas, rather than on the night of December 5th.
