“In my work I gravitate towards artistic expression, bringing out the best characteristics of each piece of wood and letting it “speak for itself,” while also pushing the boundaries of what can be made of wood. “Breakfast is Served” is a good example of this philosophy, and while the tray table employs traditional mortise and tenon joinery, with lines borrowed from Art Nouveau style, the challenge for the rest of the pieces displayed was to find the right pieces of wood that would best resemble the real thing; birds-eye elm for the bagel, creamy white holly for the napkin and cream cheese, pine for the egg yolk, and bubinga for the rose…” says Voicu Marian. “And so it is, a challenge and also a joy, seeing a non-descript piece of wood take shape into something recognizable, while spinning on the lathe with chips flying, or the curls emerging, one at a time, raised by the sharp edge of the chisel or knife. The work itself is both exacting and meditative; exacting because you can’t have sloppy joints or it won't hold together, and meditative because it is unhurried and allows my imagination to take flight as I envision the journey of each piece of wood.”
Marian’s Breakfast is Served was awarded the Brian Lonsway Memorial Award for Humor in Craft. See this masterful work in wood, along with work by 68 other artists, now through July 3rd, in the “Best of 2026” juried member’s exhibition.
