Happy Photography Day.

Two-Hearted Oak II by Roman Loranc reflects the enduring character of California’s Central Valley - a landscape the artist began photographing after moving to California in 1984. Loranc’s Two-Hearted Oak body of work is described by the artist as a homage to the Central Valley, where he found beauty and meaning in oak woodlands, wetlands, and the quiet drama of the land.

For Loranc, California’s native oaks hold a near-sacred presence: ancient witnesses to time, weather, and change. In this photograph, the tree becomes both a portrait of place and a reminder to preserve the landscapes that shape us.

What is cyanotype?

Cyanotype is a historic photographic process that uses sunlight, chemistry, and water to create deep Prussian blue images.

Instead of using a camera, objects are placed directly onto light-sensitive paper. Botanicals, lace, negatives, and small found objects become part of the final image through exposure to the sun.

The paper is then rinsed in water, revealing a blue photographic print made by hand.

This July, we’ll be bringing the process into the garden for Sun Prints: A Cyanotype Workshop at the gallery.
