If you’re an artist of any type, you know that dreadful feeling of the creative desert. That pit of despair, doubt, and a whole lot of apathy. Even if you’re not an artist you know what I’m talking about because we all believe those lies that we will never be good enough. The lies that tell us we don’t matter. They circle around in my head trying to keep me from what I’m meant to do - and more often than not…they win.
And yet, there is something so beautiful and victorious in creating. In actually showing up. Something so incredibly brave because it takes a lot to shut out the lies. It’s so freeing. So worshipful. When we simply let go of striving for an impossible perfection and create for the love of creating. I love art for a lot of reasons, but for me personally when I paint it is a victory cry of resurrection. To bring color and form and shape and movement to something once very void of life and purpose.

To celebrate the physical defeat of the grave and in my heart and the metaphorical one of finding a new life outside the proverbial artist desert of apathy, fear and excuse. It reminds me who I am. That made in the very image of the Creator himself, I too am made to create and to find joy in doing so.

I love theatre because of the way it brings people together. I was the stage manager for Cedarville's production of Comedy of Errors this fall, and I was able to see firsthand how people bond over art. Night after night, audiences come to see a show, and they get to experience different emotions and are impacted in various ways. Actors are, in turn, impacted by the audience through their feedback, involvement, and support. It's a really incredible give-and-take relationship that you can't find anywhere else, and that's why it is so special to me.

Industrial design is fun because at the start of the project, you might have no idea what the final design will look like or when inspiration will strike. While sketching ideas for this succulent planter, I was drawing aloe plants and commented, “I feel like I’m drawing pineapple tops...*GASP* A PINEAPPLE SUCCULENT PLANTER” and the idea was born.

I love music because it speaks in a way that words alone cannot. Music gives us a unique way to reach others and tell our story. Music is so powerful as the beautiful and complex melodies can speak to our heart, mind, and emotions. I love how music allows us to worship our Creator. It is always amazing to be among a group of people lifting their voices together in praise. Singing with others is one of my favorite things in the world.

I have created some pieces based on unanswered questions I have or confusing feelings I'm working through in the moment. Artists who display their thoughts honestly challenge me to do the same."

I love theatre because it is in my blood. My mom played violin for musicals when I was little and I was always backstage for productions. The smell of the paint, sawdust, costumes, velvet curtain, it all has a special place in my heart. I began acting at 4 years old and haven’t stopped since. It’s my passion. The ability to become someone entirely different on stage and enter into this world away from reality is so exciting to me and I hope to continue for many years to come.

I sewed a quilt out of rags that took 20+ hours to make. and then i destroyed it in a river. by the time i had finished filming, it was 36° outside; my feet and legs had gone numb, and my hands were cracked and bloody from the freezing water. i have been struggling lately with trying to clean myself up in the eyes of God, and this piece as well as the process involved serves as a painful reminder to myself that my own righteousness is filthy, no different than israel’s righteousness in isaiah 64. i don’t have to spend my life investing in filthy rags. when Christ died and was released from the bo***ge of the law, i died with him and was freed from striving to keep the law in order to gain righteousness. i now wear the righteousness of Christ, and it will only ever be his righteousness that counts for anything. praise be to God for this miraculous exchange.

I wanted to play the trumpet since I was in elementary school. I saw a brass band concert and they were having so much fun - and I wanted to do that. Since then, the many opportunities to work together with other musicians to create something beautiful has made the many roadblocks, obstacles, and tough times worth it. Playing the trumpet is just a small way that I can take my entire life and use it praise God.

Note: Silas’s recital is on Sunday, November 17th at 7:00 PM in the DMC Recital Hall!
