Schwob Opera Theatre at CSU

Schwob Opera Theatre is a performing ensemble at the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University. This ensemble performs full operatic works and programs of scenes from the standard literature, a touring children’s opera production, workshops of new/contemporary operas, and musical theatre. Schwob Opera Theatre is under the direction of Dr. Joshua May. We perform major operatic productions with orchestra in Bill Heard Hall, Studio Theatre, and Legacy Hall in the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. As part of our artistic training, undergraduate and graduate students work with faculty and guest artists on the development of their stagecraft through acting, dance/movement, stage combat, and stage makeup for the singing actor. Annual productions of opera, operetta, or musical theater provide a culminating experience for the young artists in our program. Recent productions from our opera seasons include Speed Dating Tonight! (Ching), Cendrillon by (Viardot), La finta giardiniera (Mozart), Dido and Aeneas (Purcell), L’elisir d’amore (Donizetti), and Amahl and the Night Visitors (Menotti). If you are interested to find out more about this ensemble, please contact Dr. Joshua May at [email protected].
