Celebrating Summer Graduates 🎓

Larissa Mulder, from Midland, Michigan graduated on Sunday with her PhD in [Ethno]Musicology / Folklore GIS.

Post-graduation she is transitioning to part-time work to focus on raising her toddler. She will teach private piano lessons and assist with high school Sunday School at her family's church. She is also working to turn her dissertation into a book for publication and writing a fantasy novel that weaves together her interests in music, folklore, nature, food and cultural diversity.

Larissa's favorite School of Music memories are connected to the community built within the graduate program. Whether celebrating Thanksgiving or picking pears at the homes of welcoming faculty, or traveling en masse to conferences around the country, "there was something joyous and delightful about being surrounded by like-minded people who shared my curiosity and my desire to pursue my passions. I loved the support, celebration and challenges my colleagues provided, and that camaraderie was always heightened and appreciated when we set out together on our various endeavors."

Her favorite course was “Experiencing Music and Sound in Prose,” a musicology seminar taught by Dr. Ryan Skinner. "It was one of the first times I got to think critically about the many ways we can write about music, as well as how we pay attention to the sounds around us and encounter and analyze them. I was challenged by, but ultimately loved, exploring the various artistic ways we can write, draw, and talk about music, and the course fundamentally changed how I approach my own writing. It also planted the seed for my passion to write a fiction book and inspired me to explore how fiction might be informed by a musicological perspective."

Larissa's advice to future students — "Seek classes outside of your degree! Interdisciplinary work provides substantial development and strengthens your abilities as a scholar within your own discipline. There are so many new ways of thinking and approaching ideas and music that can be greatly informed through interdisciplinary specializations! Be bold and unashamed!"

Congratulations Larissa. You are a .
