“Cleaning House”

We shed skin every day. Well, the stratum corneum, the top layer of five.
Protection from the elements, light, heat, abrasion. A natural necessity
removing dead, dull, damaged cells and debris, making room for new.

The same can be achieved for fear and ignorance.

Fear is also natural, “flight or fight” instinctual, other fears not so.
Not instinct, not natural.

Experience and conditioning the teachers, what
you are taught both false and true. When we cannot see we
fear the dark, till darkness offers a refuge, a place to heal or dream.

Fear of others can be unlearned if we tear away the debris of assumptions, layer
by layer and see with our eyes. Recognizing many differences are only “skin deep”.

Seeing everyone as no different breathing the same air, sharing the hope
of getting through each day without mishap, that each day’s sun will
shine brighter than the day before.

Erasing ignorance requires more effort and active participation.
Reassessing beliefs of a lifetime is no easy path. Be prepared to stumble.

Owning “I don’t know”,
bagging and burying assumptions and listening.

Literally, Stop, Look and Listen. Dialogue is the path
to freedom from bias, based on hearsay and incidents involving
one, not hundreds or thousands or more.

Not judge all by the actions of one.

Hate is easily disarmed and discarded if the two above are allowed to walk hand
in hand with Empathy. Seeing ourselves in another’s eyes. Feeling their pain and not
turning away. To share their victories and not feel diminished. Be able to relate to

dancing with their dreams in the moonlight and singing as
the sun breaks a new horizon.

A grateful Thank-you to family members, friends and neighbors who voiced concern and well wishes about my recent hospital stay. I am grateful to still be working in a field I have loved since college and to be a business owner and resident of Clintonville., who through their inquiries and well wishes made it clear they saw me as family.
