Howard County employers can now take an important step toward preparing for Maryland’s new Family and Medical Leave Insurance, or FAMLI, program.

Maryland employers with at least one employee working in the state are required to register for FAMLI. Registration allows employers to prepare their accounts, manage future reporting and contributions, and determine whether they will participate in the State Plan or pursue an approved private plan.

For our local businesses, preparing early can help make this transition smoother for both employers and employees. Payroll contributions begin January 1, 2027, with the first quarterly payment due April 30, 2027. Paid, job-protected benefits will become available to eligible workers beginning January 1, 2028.

I encourage our Howard County employers to review the requirements, register, and use the resources available through the Maryland Department of Labor to prepare for the program’s rollout.

Howard County’s Aging in Place Tax Credit helps eligible longtime homeowners, veterans, and military families remain in their homes by reducing County property taxes.

Applicants may qualify if they are 65 or older and have owned and lived in the home for 30 years; are 65 or older and retired service members with 20 years of active-duty service; have a 75% to 99% service-connected disability; or are eligible surviving spouses.

The credit equals 20% of the net County property tax on assessed value up to $650,000. After initial approval, an annual attestation is required to continue receiving it for up to 10 years.

Apply for Tax Year 2026 by October 1. The credit cannot be combined with the Senior or Public Safety Officer Tax Credit in the same year. Learn more and apply at howardcountymd.gov/finance/tax-credits.
