🩰🍿POINTE SHOE POP QUIZ!!🍿🩰

🩰 What are pointe shoes made of?

Most Pointe shoes are handmade. The box of the shoe is composed of many layers of burlap, or buckram felt, all slathered with a pasty glue. Since most pointe shoes are made of natural materials, they break down over time.

🩰 How long do pointe shoes last?

For professional dancers, pointe shoes last between 10-20 hours. That’s about 1 pair per week for our dancers depending on how many pointe pieces they are rehearsing! Pointe shoes are critical for dancer safety and technical work.

🩰 How much do pointe shoes cost?
The average cost of a pair is $80-$150. 😱

🩰 How many pointe shoes does Mareck Dance provide each season?

We currently have 6 female company members, and on average they go through one pair of pointe shoes per week. Our dance season runs for 34 weeks, soo… That's around 150-200 pairs of pointe shoes!

🩰 How does the company provide enough pointe shoes for their dancers?

As a nonprofit dance company, we rely heavily on donations from supporters near and far! Any donation helps and is so appreciated.

🩰 Can I help towards providing pointe shoes for the dancers??

🗣 Calling all musicians, composers and bands with original music!

Mareck Dance (formerly Missouri Contemporary Ballet), a professional dance company in Columbia, MO, is currently accepting submissions of original music to be used in their annual ‘LIVE!’ performances April 8th and 9th, 2023 at the Missouri Theatre.

The music will be performed live in tandem with the company dancers. All styles and genres are welcome! Most of our works range between 10-15 minutes and can be made up of several different songs.

Please send a digital file of your music with a short bio and contact information to: [email protected].

Did you know… the MCB company artists dance for 1,800+ minutes every week?! Including class and rehearsals that’s about 30 hours per week! 🤯 Any ballet dancer will tell you that their day starts at the barre with pliés so they can keep their technique “en pointe” and properly warm up their bodies for rehearsal in order to avoid injury. The company ballet technique classes are 90 minutes, 5 days a week. That’s 450 minutes or 7.5 HOURS per week. The dancers of MCB devote almost an ENTIRE workday solely to ballet class! Can you imagine having to do a 90-minute warmup before your workday started?! Or training/exercising for 30+ hours per week?!😂😱 Our dancers are incredible athletes and artists, and we cannot wait to see them back on stage in April for MCB’s performances: ‘LIVE!’- April 8 & 9! Missouri Contemporary Ballet opens its 16th season with "EMERGE" at the Missouri Theatre Friday. This annual fall performance, presented by the University Concert Series, will feature three world premieres and other work from the company's previous shows.

“Someone in a white-dominated profession can only experience life through the level of their privilege and not underneath it,” Fernando Rodriguez, Missouri Contemporary Ballet's resident choreographer, says. “It's important to have voices from those parts of life being able to produce and create work (and) spread knowledge about their culture that can't be represented by anyone else who hasn't lived that.”

“(Missouri Contemporary Ballet) has a long history of diversity within their dancers," MCB choreographer Fernando Rodriguez says. Missouri Contemporary Ballet is thrilled to announce that tickets for MCB’s performance of LIVE! are officially on sale through Ticketmaster and the Missouri Theatre Box Office. The performances will take place at Jesse Auditorium so audience members are able to practice social distancing properly with “pod seating” for each set of tickets purchased.

LIVE! is an audience favorite, featuring both live dance and live music. This production consists of music from various genres including original compositions by Tom Andes and Molly Healey. LIVE! will feature five world premieres and one piece from the MCB repertoire choreographed by Executive/Artistic Director Karen Mareck Grundy, Resident Choreographer Fernando Rodriguez, Autumn Eckman, Stephanie Martinez, and Shannon Lee West.
