University of South Carolina Choirs From the Renaissance to Jazz, the Choral Department at the USC has something for everyone Concert Choir:
The prestigious Concert Choir, directed by Alicia W.

The University of South Carolina Choral Department offers various ensembles for students of all skill levels to participate in, from the prestigious Concert Choir to the intimate Graduate Vocal Ensemble. Walker while Larry Wyatt is on sabbatical, has performed both near and far, performing abroad in such countries as Spain, Italy and Austria. This ensemble meets 4.5 hours per week and tours during

the weekend before Thanksgiving and sometimes during spring break. Foreign tours occur during the break between semesters or during spring break. Recent engagements include a tour of Spain, performing the Bach B Minor Mass; performing as the Choir-in-residence for the Classical Music Seminar in Eisenstadt, Austria; a tour of China as a prelude to the 2008 Summer Olympics; and concerts with the Jerusalem Symphony under Lawrence Foster, Sergiu Comissiona and Krystof Penderecki. University Chorus, will be directed this year by Daniel Cole, performs regularly both on and off campus, including abroad, and has also joined with the USC Concert Choir and USC Orchestra to perform outstanding choral-orchestral works. University Chorus is open to all students without audition. Just register as you would any other class. University Chorus meets 4.5 hours per week. Carolina Alive:
Carolina Alive is an auditioned vocal jazz ensemble of 12-16 singers chosen by audition. In addition to traditional vocal jazz, they sing jazz arrangements of popular tunes. This ensemble group performs a ca****la, with keyboards, combo and big bands. Carolina Alive requires auditions and rehearsals take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:40 a.m.–12:55 p.m. For more information, email Aletha Jacobs, director of Carolina Alive, or call 803-777-0227. USC Men's Chorus:
The Men’s Chorus is open to all male students regardless of major. Repertoire includes a variety of genres, from chant and classical works to folk songs and a ca****la arrangements. The Men’s Chorus, directed by Alicia Walker, is open to all tenors and basses without an audition. Register for MUSC 128. The one-credit course meets Mondays from 6–8:30 p.m. Not majoring in music, but would like a creative outlet? This is a great chance to get together with other men and sing purely for the joy of singing. The Women's Chorus:
The Women's Chorus is open to all female students regardless of major. Repertoire varies from traditional women's chorus literature to classical, spirituals, multicultural and contemporary. The Women's Chorus, directed by Lindsey Cope, is open to all sopranos and altos without an audition. Register for MUSC 127. This is a one-credit course and meets Tuesdays from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. Not majoring in music? This is a wonderful opportunity to participate in a community of women who love to sing! Graduate Vocal Ensemble:
The Graduate Vocal Ensemble is one of the hallmarks of the master's and doctoral degree programs in choral conducting. The ensemble provides conducting experience for graduate choral conducting majors and the chance to complete recital requirements. The ensemble, directed by Larry Wyatt, is made up of graduate choral conducting majors, interested graduate voice majors, advanced undergraduate singers, and other interested students by permission of the director of Choral Studies. The ensemble, directed by graduate students, rehearses 2.5 hours per week and usually performs two concerts per semester.

Congratulations to Concert Choir and conductor Dr. Alicia W. Walker for being selected as a SCMEA Featured Performing Choir! We look forward to sharing our program in February.

Congratulations to AC Thompson (BM ’20) for being selected to present her interest session, and to Dr. Eliezer Yanson Jr. (DMA ’10) and the Jacksonville State University A Ca****la Choir for being selected as a performing choir!

Spencer Germany (MM ’27) won the 2026 Georgia ACDA Choral Composition Competition. His work, “Joy”, will be performed by the Georgia ACDA Collegiate Honor Choir at this year’s conference. Congratulations, Spencer!
