One of my favorite parts of luthier work is oiling the fretboard…I recently finished re-fretting the vintage Konstantiniadi bouzouki that I’m currently restoring. My goal is to be finished by Christmas!

I literally built this fretboard from scratch two times now. I for some reason thought the scale length of the bouzouki was 67 cm long like my previous restoration. When I was about to attach it I felt like something seemed off. When I measured it, it turns out the original scale length was 66 cm. I couldn’t simply change the position of the bridge like you could on a newer bouzouki because this one has a very prominent bent top like an old Italian bowl back mandolin. The bridge must rest slightly above the break or bend in the top for it to be correct. It was a good lesson in different scale lengths on bouzoukia and how a one cm mistake can make a huge difference. Luckily the work on the first fretboard will not be entirely in vain. I will be able to use it on another bouzouki that I’ll be restoring.

The intro rif in this was my first original rif that I came up with back in 2010. I finally put together a full song with it. I’m calling it “Weathering the Storm” the bouzouki was made by master luthier

Just having some fun! For those who don’t know, here’s a quick run on the famous rif from the song Fragosiriani by Markos Vamvakaris in the style of one of my favorite reggae bands .official The bouzouki is my recent Tourist Bouzouki restoration/re-build.

Next phases in the Konstantinidi restoration, re-attached bracing with hide glue and reshaped for improved sound, reinforced soundhole, cleated cracks in bowl, attached new kerfing inside bowl, re-attached top, new binding, etc., etc. last pic for reference.

The Konstantinidi bouzouki restoration continues. Here I’m applying a finishing resin early to help strengthen the wood of the bowl while I’m working on it. The bouzouki is most likely from the 1940’s and was very fragile when I found it. By the end of the restoration it should be much stronger.
