Bomba carries deep cultural and historical significance for Puerto Rico. Developed in the 1500s and 1600s by enslaved West Africans, Bomba was originally used as a way to express feelings of sadness, anger, and rebellion. The syncopated drumbeats and specific dance moves allowed enslaved people to communicate in secret and even plan revolts right under the eyes of their colonizers.

Unlike many traditional dances with strict choreography, Bomba is an improvisational conversation. The dancer challenges the lead drummer (subidor) by making swift movements, and the drummer must match the rhythm to the dancer’s physical cues.

Bomba is far more than a performance; it is a communal lifestyle that brings the island together during festivals, holidays, and weekly community gatherings.
