Orr Street Studios is a creative space which is located in a beautiful modern industrial style complex. There are 18 individual studios that fluctuate betwe
en 20 and 30 artist inhabitants. Fifteen of the studio doors are fascinating works of art created by sculptor Chris Teeter. Orr Street Studios is maintained and operated by the Orr Street Artist Guild, a 501 C3 non-profit organization. There is a spacious interior gallery space that is available for exhibits and events. The community at large is invited to many free events and happenings that help the art community entertain, educate and engage the public. Orr Street Studios recognizes that Black artists are underrepresented in the art world, and that dedicated studio space is key for developing an artistic practice. By implementing Black Artist in Residency Program, Orr Street Studios seeks to make the valuable resource of studio space more readily available to Black artists in the Columbia, Missouri area.

Black Artist In Residence Description
This residency offers individual studio space for one year to three Black artists working in Columbia, MO or the surrounding area. This residency is meant to support both emerging and established artists whose practice could benefit from dedicated studio space.
Applicants must demonstrate a body of work that reflects their active commitment to their practice. While one is not required to have a history of exhibitions, we do require demonstrable proof of a devoted practice and understanding of how one will use the studio space to continue their practice.
Residents will be a part of the Orr Street Studios artist community. Please read the Orr Street House Rules to ensure that you’re able to comply before applying.
Based upon submitted materials, the artist selected will be chosen without preference over race, color, gender, national or ethnic origin, age, religion, creed, disability, veteran's status, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.

Resident Artists Will Receive
-Rent-free studio space at Orr Street Studios from September 1, 2022 to August 26, 2023. Studio spaces are approximately 144 square feet.
-A one-time $250 stipend
-The residency culminates in an exhibition of resident artists’ work in the Orr Street Gallery.
-A one-year membership to Columbia Art League
Application Process
Please submit all application materials by July 24th, 2022.
After viewing application materials, the committee will select applicants for interviews to take place between August 1-5, 2022.

Orr Street photographer David Lancaster will be featured during host Diana Moxon's Speaking of the Arts KOPN Thursday 7 -8 pm radio show.
David will be discussing his upcoming photo exhibit "Broken".
As the Medical Director of Capital Region Medical Center’s Rehabilitation Unit, David was overwhelmed by COVID and its impact on his coworkers and patients. He felt that the people in the midst of this pandemic needed their voices to be heard. The exhibit includes over 20 portraits and stories told by those people.

Orr Street Studios opened in February of 2007. We re-habilitated and joined old industrial buildings to create 21 artist studios for artists to work in and interact with the community at large. The studios are fronted with six foot by nine foot sculptural doors created by local artist Chris Teeter that are on permanent display as well as art work from each studio’s artist. In addition, we host revolving exhibitions by guest artists in our gallery as well as community shows throughout the year. There is always something new to see!
Orr Street is a member of the North Village Arts District in Columbia and participates in monthly First Friday celebrations from 6 to 9 pm. First Friday is the perfect time for socializing, listening to live music, enjoying refreshments and drinks and seeing new exhibits from guest artists. It’s a great time to meet our resident artists in their studios, see what they are working on and talk about their work. Orr Street Studios was created for the enjoyment and love of the visual arts. It is an ideal, vibrant setting for people to meet, talk and enjoy art.
We are located at 106 Orr Street in Downtown Columbia, Missouri. Open hours are Thursday through Sunday, noon to 3 pm; other times by appointment. However, if you happen to be in the neighborhood, feel free to stop by. The studios may be open at any time artists are working. We have had weddings, receptions, showers, birthday parties, memorial gatherings, fund raisers, book openings, office parties, lectures, meetings and more.
