Artist statement:

In 2010 I took over my son’s studio at Orr Street Studios and began painting

I paint with oil on canvas using both sponge and brush. The style is Expressionism.

All my paintings have a bird either as the main focus or for accent. The themes all have a personal meaning, either because the theme is from my life experience or is a cause I believe in.

The Missouri Photo Workshop exhibit will be up until April 27.

Top photographers from all over the world vie to be part of this program. They descend on Missouri towns, capturing the essence of what’s going on there. The historical context is very interesting. We hope you are able to come and view the show.

The Remillard children, Lynn, Tim, Laurie and Linda, wait for a school bus on the corner of Sixth and Wilson as the youngest sibling, Luann, peeks out of a window in the family’s home. The children’s uniforms met the standard dress code at Our Lady of Lourdes.Photographing daily life in a small town encouraged photographers to make meaningful pictures out of ordinary situations. Participation in the workshop often came from word-of-mouth recommendations, and that participation changed the visual culture at many newspapers. Bill Strode of the Louisville Courier-Journal gave a presentation at the workshop. He said that after the workshop, participants use truth and honesty as their guide and are better photographers who treat their subjects with sensitivit

The prevailing theme in my work the past 40 years has been “Obstacle as Catalyst”. The WarWoman series of the eighties evolved from obstacles of gender to become a catalyst in becoming a resilient, spirited woman.

The small “Cullowhee” drawings were the result of being raised deep in Appalachia and finding discreet ways in which to negate the back-woods southern stereotype....again obstacle as catalyst.

About the Work

Light in all of its manifestations has been my primary interest in the ongoing work displayed here: landscapes, cityscapes and geometric abstractions. To me, light is the foundation of seeing and a metaphor for knowing.

The landscapes – influenced by the Hudson River School, the Impressionists, Cezanne, Matisse and others – are painted outdoors, plein air style, and completed in the studio. I paint landscapes because I am fascinated by the natural world and the idea of transcendence, to be at once in the world and yet go beyond it. That’s what happens in painting, an act of the mind as much as it is of paint and brush. In a way, I become one with what I see, what I try to interpret in paint. These landscapes are evidence of those journeys.

Artist’s Statement

I aspire to make art using both the head and the heart; I want to ground my work in rich ideas and intellectual tradition, but I want to balance that with a sense of intuition and emotion. A part of the role of art for me is to evoke a sense of wonder, to ask questions that may not even have answers, to see and help others to see in new ways. Some of the recurring themes that I explore in my work include layers, cyclic transformation, and illusion. I search for connections between different ideas as I work to see how they intersect to create new narratives. My work also often involves some dialogue with artists from art history.

Art Creativity and Community

Orr Street Studios opened in February of 2007. We re-habilitated and joined old industrial buildings to create 21 artist studios for artists to work in and interact with the community at large. The studios are fronted with six foot by nine foot sculptural doors created by local artist Chris Teeter that are on permanent display as well as art work from each studio’s artist. In addition, we host revolving exhibitions by guest artists in our gallery as well as community shows throughout the year. There is always something new to see!

Orr Street is a member of the North Village Arts District in Columbia and participates in monthly First Friday celebrations from 6 to 9 pm. First Friday is the perfect time for socializing, listening to live music, enjoying refreshments and drinks and seeing new exhibits from guest artists. It’s a great time to meet our resident artists in their studios, see what they are working on and talk about their work. Orr Street Studios was created for the enjoyment and love of the visual arts. It is an ideal, vibrant setting for people to meet, talk and enjoy art.

We are located at 106 Orr Street in Downtown Columbia, Missouri. Open hours are Thursday through Sunday, noon to 3 pm; other times by appointment. However, if you happen to be in the neighborhood, feel free to stop by. The studios may be open at any time artists are working. For general information about Orr Street Studios, or to be added to the mailing list, or for information about renting a studio contact: Ivy Case at [email protected] Orr Street Studios is also available for event rentals. We have had weddings, receptions, showers, birthday parties, memorial gatherings, fund raisers, book openings, office parties, lectures, meetings and more. If you are interested in hosting an event at Orr Street Studios contact Jenn Wiggs, our event manager, at [email protected]. Jenn can answer your questions, give you a tour and show you photos of past events for ideas and inspiration.

We look forward to seeing you soon!
